See, herein lies my problem with 4K. They release the first one, but chances are we will never see any of the sequels. That has become a pretty common occurrence with the onset of 4K/UHD, and I don't like it - at all. I like having all of the films or none. Guess I'm a little OCD in that regard. At any rate, I have the European Blu-ray edition with all four films in the set, so I'm officially going to take the old wait and see approach. My guess is that I'm going to be doing a whole lot of waiting and not much seeing.

It’s no different than BD really. Not everything that gets a release will be in a set. Sony has put out a few like Bad Boys and Ghostbusters. We’ve seen a bunch of sets. TDK, M:I, Ryan’s, Mummy’s, Bournes, Predator. I’m sure I’m missing some.

I’m fine with just the first.

Blu-ray did much of the same thing, yes.

Overall, its hard to find a film series where every title is truly liked and held in high enough regard to warrant a total series release in 4K. I hear ya and there are some that Id rather have them all but for the most part Im fine with just 1 or 2 in a series n 4K. Like Alien/Aliens or Superman 1/2 where just the first two films matter to me at all. There are others.

Disney buying Fox makes this possible with Alien and Die Hard, but I wouldn't be that pessimistic here. Karate Kid 2 has a good size fanbase, was a pretty big cultural thing back in the day, and Sony are more liberal with catalog releases on UHD. Will it definitely happen? No, but I wouldn't be that pessimistic.

Now if you mean 3 and Next, then yeah... almost surely never gonna happen. Maybe if labels deep dive on catalog movies for UHD and stick around for two decades, I guess.

I'm really happy with the cover art, and I think it is really nice that's they included a vintage Columbia Pictures Home Video logo on the side and back of the release. Excited to see how this new 4K version looks, and to have it in Dolby Vision in Vudu and iTunes hopefully with the digital copy.

I started redeeming my digital copies lately and was surprised to see how few Sony movies are actually 4k on those services. I hear Sony does them in 4k on their own services, I'm assuming Playstation Store or whatever, but on Vudu and iTunes stuff like Cliffhanger is still HD.

Every UHD Blu-ray that I have ever redeemed from Sony has always redeemed in 4K, Cliffhanger redeemed in 4K for me on Movies Anywhere but is not available on any digital service in the US yet. I believe Cliffhanger is the only movie from Sony that is not available yet from any digital services in the US. You have to redeem in Movies Anywhere and it will redeem in 4K and be ported everywhere from there. But early releases that I redeemed in Vudu since they don't have them in 4K yet it doesn't port to Movies Anywhere and then back to the other digital services. I had to contact Sony and they gave me new codes for ones I redeemed in Vudu and were HD to redeem in Movies Anywhere at 4K.

Fox is the studio that's REALLY bad about 4K digital copies. Many of their UHD releases only include 1080p digitals.

It's much more than just Cliffhanger, at least on Vudu. I redeem them on MA (now anyway) and many of them are still HD only. Underworld is another, and Chappie, Salt, Hancock, The Shallows, Groundhog Day, Air Force One, Bad Boys II, Bridge Over the River Kwai, Close Encounters... I could go on. None of these are on Vudu in UHD at all, no matter what code you use where. Can't even buy them directly.

Some of them might be in UHD on iTunes, but after a long test I decided I don't like iTunes' compression and don't want to pay extra to be in their walled garden. Either way the point is it's surprisingly impossible to own everything digitally. None of this even mentioned the fact that label remasters from Arrow, Shout, etc. are not available digitally in most cases. So the tl;dr is that even if you thing streaming compression is fine you're still stuck owning a lot of discs if you want the best masters. With labels seemingly going strong I don't see that changing for a long time.

Vudu doesn't have the UHD version of those title but many other providers do have them in UHD, that is why I had to get the codes re-sent (I provided my proof of purchase and some photos), I originally redeemed my movies in Vudu before Movies Anywhere (MA) and there weren't showing as UHD because Vudu didn't have them in that format and Vudu doesn't send the right message to other services in MA. So when I redeemed in MA it send everything in UHD to the other services including Amazon, iTunes and Fandango Now and more. I think Movies Anywhere looks very good, I use the app on my Sony TV and I like using it the best. MA always has the 4K flag with movies so that even when they are added later in 4K it should pop up. I think a lot of people want Vudu to fix their system to allow it to send the 4K to others with UV closing soon.

Cliffhanger seems like a different thing since it's not available on anything yet, It may be a licensing thing (since it's another studio WW) to have it in 4K, who knows.

I only use Google, iTunes and Movies Anywhere to watch movies though because I can't use Vudu right now since I'm overseas with the military.

I'm with you mate. Can't be anyone that watches KK part 1 and then doesn't watch all 3. Just impossible not to unless you truly loathe the sequels. I love all three, and usually watch them all back to back in one sitting.

I would want the first two at least, but at the same time if we don't support the first film, the rest won't come.

I would love the first three Die Hard films in 4K, but I bought the first because it's awesome and I want to support it to increase the odds of the other films getting a 4K release. Even if the other films never see a UHD release, I still am glad I have the first at least. I can stomach re-buying one film as opposed to re-buying entire seasons of a TV show.

Eh. Die Hard, as with Alien, is the best film out of each respective series by quite some distance so if that's all we were to get on 4K then I'll lap it up anyways. It's not that I don't love several of the other movies in those series because I do, but the first ones are undisputed classics of their respective genres.
