Like Gatiss or not, The Dead Room was excellent (Xmas Eve, BBC4):

Yeah, The Dead Room was bloody dire.

Speaking of blood, it's nice to see the new artwork for the upcoming release of The Blood on Satan's Claw finally got the title right (adding The to the beginning).

It was never called THE back in the day when it was first released. And there are plenty of film posters around which don't have THE on them. It seems to have been added when it first appeared on dvd. I don't recall whether it was the dvd or the Blu where the titles were recreated and screwed up with several spelling mistakes so they can't be trusted as accurate.

The definitive book on British horror of the 70's "Ten Years of Terror" from Fenton and Flint also does not include THE - that book dates from 2001.

TV Times listings for its broadcasts on ITV regions in the 70's also do not include THE

Here's the poster from the original 1970 double bill - no THE again.

I think it was in the US where it was released as The Blood on Satan's Claw, UK posters of the time don't have the "The" as you say. It definitely wasn't something added for the DVD release. Plenty of vintage posters out there with "The" on them, most have the US "R" rating on them.

Of course the film's own opening title cards state The Blood on Satan's Claw so you can argue that this is the film's true title and the posters just got it wrong.

Pompous or not, Mark Gatiss can do whatever he wants, and I would forgive him. History of Horror and the later Horror Europa were excellent IMHO.

That's the US titles, which misspel the production company as Tigron.

I've always gone by the opening title credits on the movie - or rather the DVD/BD - itself. I had no idea they'd been recreated at some point. Do you know if there was a reason for that?

Interesting stuff, chaps. Cheers! I've been a fan of the movie ever since I saw it on TV in the '70s, but I've never looked into the background of it (because I'm usually more interested in the story being told than the storytellers themselves).

But this prompted me to have a cursory dig around the net to settle my own curiosity.

---

From Wikipedia:

[Director Piers] Haggard says there were a number of titles:

"It was initially The Devil's Touch and then Satan’s Skin. I think Satan's Skin is the best title. When it was sold to America, this wonderful old showman Sam Arkoff of AIP bought it and they released it as Blood on Satan's Claw. Tony Tenser then changed the title and I thought that was a bit infra-dig, a bit naff. So I think Satan's Skin was my favourite."

From IMDb:

US release date: 14 April 1971
UK release date: 16 July 1971

---

So... the American distributor gave the movie the name we all know it by, the US posters were printed, including The in the title and the movie was released in the US three months before the UK saw it. Tony Tenser, (the UK distributor?) went along with the US title for the eventual UK release, but the UK quads dropped the definitive article for whatever reason. A genuine error, or maybe it sounded slightly snappier? M'luds, this leads me to conclude (only for myself, of course ) that the movie's title is, indeed, The Blood on Satan's Claw.

Having waffled somewhat, I do like Haggard's preferred Satan's Skin as a title.

Dangnamit I knew that and completely forgot about it! I don't get enough opportunities to talk about this film to keep my memory fresh!

I had already noticed this striking similarity, but had assumed it was all above board...

When the cover for the new Blu-ray was released, I was alerted to the similarity to my illustration. The distributor, Screenbound Pictures, never sought my permission to use or adapt the design, yet had reproduced the colour scheme, treatment and basic composition…

Wow, that's undeniable.

Why not just use the original art?

Sorta makes me feel bad at throwing money at this release now.

It's a terrific audio, and especially with members of The League in it and doing commentary on the film, makes a nice companion to the movie.

However, BS move by Screenbound, stealing the art. I'd noticed the similiarity and honestly just assumed they got Stuart in as well and he'd asked Bafflegab if they'd mind him altering his own design.

Tenser may be confused.
No idea if Arkoff bought it, but if he did, he sold it to Cannon.
AIP never released it.

That SATAN'S SKIN title looks bad with the artwork, text does not fit at all.
