I saw this in 2k xenon digital IMAX tonight. It was enthralling. The audio and visuals are superb. It’s just amazing that some of this footage even exists. I know it’s unfair to compare this to First Man, but Apollo 11 is everything I wanted First Man to be. I enjoyed this infinitely more. I highly recommend checking this out while you can.

Saw it in 2D Imax. Amazing documentary, it was the next best thing to being there. Excellent quality footage which I didn't even know existed. The soundtrack was also excellent.

This was absolutely enthralling. Right from the start, you're immediately immersed into the mission, with just a few hours to go before launch. You see final preparations begin, and spectators start to arrive. There's no narrator, or interviews; you're seeing, and hearing what's happening, almost as if you're watching it in real-time with the rest of the world.
It's an odd sensation to be so fully engaged in the launch like that. I see someone two seats over holding his hands up to his face, and sitting at the edge of his seat. My own palms feel sweaty. I know that everything goes smoothly, but the film really captures the moments before, and during the launch with such immediacy that you can't help but feel the emotional impact of it all when the countdown finally hits zero. I actually nearly teared up from watching the liftoff. It's like in that moment, I thought about how much all these people, this country, and even our race had to go through to get to this point. I can't say everyone will feel the same way I felt watching this, but it was very much a moving experience for me. I saw it on one of the biggest, and best IMAX screens in the country, and I still don't think it was large enough to really capture it all. The imagery, and level of detail of the footage was unreal. The colors were rich, and vibrant, and the clarity of the picture made it feel at times like it was filmed yesterday. The footage in the module, and on the moon are understandably not as good as from the ground, or mission control center, but were still great to see. Some still photography on the moon, with audio, helped fill in some gaps as well. I really loved the sort of no-hands approach to the documentary, letting the footage and audio mostly speak for themselves. There were a few basic graphics, and animations used to show some of the procedures in space, but otherwise it was all just raw footage, restored, and edited beautifully together. The film was supported strongly by a solid score, which was heavy on the bass, and synth, giving it a sort of 80's action movie vibe, but it worked really well in my opinion. Many will inevitably think of First Man when watching this. I know one criticism of that film was that it didn't touch on the mission enough, and focused more on Armstrong and his personal life. Well this documentary provides audiences with the mission side of things, and should pair nicely with the film. I actually think this film may lead to a greater appreciation of Chazelle's effort, as he was able to accomplish a lot of the look, and feel of the actual mission quite accurately. Overall, this is one of the better theatrical experiences I've had in a long while. My theater, which was moderately filled, applauded at the end. I had already felt it from the film itself, but that shared appreciation from watching one our greatest achievements, really brought home that sense that we're all in this together on this planet. I highly recommend watching this in IMAX if you can, but if not, still try and seek it out in theaters. 5/5 Last edited by MifuneFan; 03-01-2019 at 07:27 PM. |

If the trailer is any indication, I'm most impressed that they were able to re-frame the archival footage (originally 1.33 AR) to 'scope' proportions, and still maintain an esthetically-balanced presentation ... and in the process of doing so, imbue the film with an epic '2001:ASO'-vibe

Saw it today in IMAX. Wow. It was incredible. Exhilarating. At the points where the clock was on screen and everything was happening in real time, and the cues of the soundtrack, I could feel the anticipation and anxiety that everyone that was actually there was surely feeling.
The whole space race era is one of my favorite periods of history. I've studied it extensively, and watched every documentary that has ever been made, most of them so many times I couldn't count them all. Just ask my wife, if it's about NASA, especially the moon missions, we watch it and probably own it, sometimes to her chagrin ![]() At some points during the film, even knowing and expecting every aspect of the mission, I was on the edge of my seat. This was one of those times where I think that knowing what's going to happen makes me even more anxious for it. In particular the lift off, and the lunar module landing. I even once leaned over to my wife to tell her how fast my heart was racing. Only one theatre in our area was showing it, and only last night and today, so we took off work to catch an afternoon showing. And I'm so glad we did. I'll pick up the Blu-ray, but this was definitely one worth seeing in IMAX. |

I saw it in IMAX laser tonight with a q+a with the Director after as well. He talked a bit about the technical details that at first their plan was to scan the footage at 4K when it was 16 and 35mm material they had, but when they got access to large format material in May 2017, the scanner mentioned if they waited 6 months they could scan that material at 16K, which he of course decided to do and said they were speechless for hours when first reviewing the material.
He talked about his love of large format films of the 50s and 60s and Cinerama so he was very happy to be working with that kind of film and releasing on IMAX (which he views as the modern day version of those formats). He also mentioned part of his influence in how to handle the narrative (without much set up or a narrator) was inspired by Nolan’s Dunkirk and again mentioned Dunkirk and Darkest Hour as examples of films which came out close together about the same events which he thought were both great and why he felt there was room for this and First Man close together (though he knew First Man would get more attention). |
