Chinese-made HD DVD players selling for $199 are expected to hit store shelves by December, while Sony is widely expected to cut the cost of its Blu-ray machine to as low as $299 by year’s end.

“When that occurs, the studios and Sony are going to pull out the big guns,” said Phillip Swann, president of the technology-oriented Web site TVpredictions.com. “They are going to release more titles, big titles, and really go for the kill this holiday season.”

“This is not about a high-def movie on a disc,” said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “It’s about a fully immersive experience, connected interactivity. That’s what is going to separate these high-def formats.”

Kornblau said he isn’t worried about Blu-ray’s momentum and doesn’t believe there’s a need for one to knockout the other.

HD-A2 are already close to selling at $199. They may already be doing so in some cases.

I don't think, even if it is sponsored (Toshiba waives royalties), that it possible for a $199 SRP player at this time.

BOM:

Drive: $50
SoC: $20
CPU: $40
Misc: $50
Royalties: $40

Cost: $200

For $199 SRP, the cost must be around $120

I suppose if MS-Toshiba give away the drives, pay the non-Toshiba royalties, and waive the Toshiba royalties it could be done.

I know talking with hardware insiders that they are very angry with Toshiba. You can imagine what the BD studios think of Kornblau right now.

It's a point you and others have brought up many a time: One wonders how much corporate damage and bridges have been burned already by some of these HD-DVD zealot types that they're going to sorely regret later on?...

It's not just individuals, either. Toshiba, Microsoft, and Universal Studios are going to be increasingly cast in a very negative light thanks to certain individuals from within their walls.

Responsible corporate citizens (if there any left in those companies) sorely need to wake up soon, smell the coffee, smell whatever they have to , and start taking action.

I absolutely will not and neither will a growing number of others.

The studio has developed a dual-format disc and has said it would license the technology to other studios
willing to back both.

Warner needs to get a clue.

Warner has little to no IP in Blu-ray. So, Blu-ray winning outright is a loss for them. TotalHD is a merging of Warner IP with Blu-ray.

Noone likes their (WB's) HD DVD/DVD flippers, so what makes 'em think that BD/HD DVD flippers will be received any better? I *like* silk screened art work on my discs--and the cost saving is an added bonus.

DVD-18 are 20% more than the price of two DVD-9s (which explains why they are so rarely used). And HD DVD-30 is about 1.4x a DVD-9.

Assume 10% less yield for a flipper combo, and a 15% real world failure rate, the real cost of a HD DVD/DVD combo is:

(1 + 1.4) * 1.2 * 1.1 * 1.15 = 3.64x DVD

That is WAY above BD-25, and probably now well above BD-50.

I think if it came down to buying a TotalHD disc or buying a SD DVD, I'd buy the DVD, just so I didn't support HD DVD. There's absolutely no reason for people to buy two different players to serve the exact same purpose. While I'm at it I'll buy another stove, one to cook chicken in, and the other to cook beef. Some people just don't think.
