In a PERFECT world, KLSC would also include Carradine's appearance on the Letterman show in which he calls this his worst movie. Though I happen to love it meself. And if leading lady Melinda Casey/Plowman could be tracked down for an interview...even better! |

So excited for THE EARTHLING next week. Don’t forget to secure a copy if, like me, you have fond memories of being horrified and depressed by this movie as a child and want to experience the trauma all over again! It’s going to be like seeing it for the first time.

I really love this film. And I love Kino for bringing them out on Blu-ray. Another MGM title I'd love to see on Blu-ray is Jason's Lyric with Jada Pinkett. Wonderful film. |

I'm buying this regardless... but I had kinda hoped you'd get interviews with Steve Guttenberg and Elizabeth McGovern.

John Carradine's worst film is arguably IS THIS TRIP REALLY NECESSARY, a dreadfully unfunny comedy which manages to incorporate LSD and torture devices. Carradine plays a demented movie director. An actress named Carol Kane also appears in it, but the famous Carol Kane (THE MAFU CAGE) has never acknowledged that she was in that film.
IS THIS TRIP did surface on VHS back in the waning days of the format, via a direct-mail ad in one of the genre magazines. This was after Tom Weaver had written his book on Carradine. I believe that IS THIS TRIP might have been the only Carradine film that Weaver hadn't seen when he wrote his book. |

There are probably a dozen or so Disney catalog titles with this problem, affecting various Kino Lorber and Mill Creek releases of 80s/90s live action films. No idea why it happened but seems like an issue with the masters Disney provided.

The first mention of IS THIS TRIP REALLY NECESSARY (1970) that I ever saw was in Michael Weldon's first Psychotronic book. I don't think he had seen the film, because his write-up was essentially a plot resume that might have been borrowed from a pressbook synopsis. Unfortunately, that blurb made the film sound more like a dark sleaze film (think BLOODY PIT OF HORROR). In part, Weldon wrote "...Carradine plays an insane director working on an epic sex film who gives actresses LSD, then kills them with an iron maiden in his private torture chamber." I had no idea from that quote that the film would prove to be an embarassingly unfunny farce. The IMDB lists the title as BLOOD OF THE IRON MAIDEN. BILLY THE KID VS. DRACULA is a masterpiece, compared to IS THIS TRIP REALLY NECESSARY. Last edited by Jobla; 03-09-2019 at 10:39 PM. |

Yeah, John Carradine must have forgotten that he starred in Astro Zombies (which I proudly own) when he called BtKvsD his worst film....

Kino Lorber Insider,
Following up on my earlier question about The Bat (1959)...am I correct in thinking Disney has the elements because it was financed by AB-PT and Disney now owns the AB-PT film library (or maybe I'm all wrong here)? I'm just curious if this means AB-PT's four other films would be available from Disney in the future: Beginning of the End (Bert I. Gordon's giant locust movie) The Unearthly (the John Carradine-Tor Johnson horror flick) Eighteen and Anxious (50s teen melodrama) Girl in the Woods (Tom Gries's lumberjack movie) |
