Isn't that playing into the perception that games are only for kids then? I always thought this generation more than any of the previous ones would be the time when gaming would be considered a more mature multimedia platform. Yes technically they are "games" but they are becoming interactive cinematic type experiences.

How so? The big six studios don't do NC-17 movies in theatres, you have to go to special cinemas if you want to watch an NC-17 movie and you have to go to a special store to buy/rent them.

The fact is there isn't a market for these types of games outside the current Japanese H-games which usually consist of tentacle rape porn...

sounds like you might like Tears to Tiara (was going to post the link for it from Kotaku.com but I think the mods probably wouldn't want me to post it). Of course its not an AO rated title because its not too extreme but its pretty darn close to it

As for the topic at hand, no, I don't see us ever getting AO titles on any console. The main reason being that the companies use this block to prevent straight out porn games coming out. Sure, there are some AO games that might come out that are just violent and maybe have some brief nudity, but there would be no way to stop the ones that are all about sex anymore.

What hopefully happens instead is the ESRB starting to be more accepting of things and games that might have previously gotten AO ratings get M ratings instead.

Well my main gripe is that what is considered Mature content for a video game equates to PG-13 as far as movies go. Sure there is swearing and blood but you could mix in a little fun too.

GoW is almost there. It reminds me of watching 300 where there is great action pieces but then there is also that tasteful sex scene. GoW 3 has the potential to go that far. The problem is I think that if a developer were to push the envelope to show nude breasts during a sex scene in a game, nevermind either partners private parts, they would automatically get rated AO by the ESRB.

So maybe not a AO title in the way you are thinking about an AO title but more of a Mature title that is Rated R content.

I think the problem with rating games is the interactivity of them. Movies are not interactive, you watch them and listen to them. Games you take part in the story and what you do in the game can have an effect on other characters in it, which is why ratings are much more stringent in gaming.

It is probably a good thing, think about it, a PG-13 movie can be Live Free or Die Hard which has a lot of realistic violence and adult themes, but put that in a game and it is a totally different story as you are actually picking up a controller and making the guy do stuff and shoot people, crash cars etc... The more kids become desensitised to this stuff the worse off society will be. It is alright once to you are mature and developed enough to understand it is just a game but most minors aren't.

That right there is my main issue. The concern of content in video games arises when people worry about kids and minors playing them. The ESRB states themselves that Mature rated games are for 17+ but parents and many stores aren't too strict in enforcing it. If you're going to make a mature game then why do people get upset when children are exposed to it? There's a warning label on it.

That's a different issue entirely. Down to shitty parenting, shitty media reporting, shitty stores selling M-rated games to minors, shitty ESA blocking legislation to make it illegal to sell M-rated games to minors. Plenty of stuff. Really all the situation needs is for one of those groups to be responsible for the kids, and it should be the parents.

And once they are made responsible can I get nippleage in my games?

tasteful? what movie were you watching? those sex scenes were pretty raw and rough. just like the rest of the movie. the only thing tasteful about that movie was the popcorn i was eating while watching it

IMO, video games are good enough without the 'extra' stuff to merit an AO rating. and to be honest, most of the time when they put nudity etc in movies, it is detracting from the over-all feel of the movie. it is a diaphanous mechanic more often than not. or is simply put in there to get teenage boys to watch it

and correct me if im wrong, but in GoW and chains of olympus, don't you press buttons to hump? lol, mmmmm tasteful.

That's all true... but a Mature 17+ game rating doesn't allow for nearly as much wiggle room as an "R" rated movie, which is also recomended for 17+. There's no where near as much nudity allowed.

I had a 3DO system back in the day, and I bought/rented quite a few AO rated games for it. I had these two games, which I remember buying at Babbage's (now known as Gamestop).
