Default Sony Blu-ray Disc Player (BDPS350) Problem with Scratched DVDs

I bought this player at Christmas and have the newest updates but I am having a problem with scratched dvds and can't find anything about this. I have been trying different Google searches and nothing.

When it gets to a scratched part on a regular dvd it freezes up for a second and then skips to the next chapter. does this happen on all players or just mine? I am wondering if something is wrong with mine because my old dvd player would just skip the scratched part. The blu-ray player always skips ahead to the next chapter after the skip. This is a really big pain and I am wondering if this is my player or do they all do this?

This happened on about 15 dvds that I have rented since i got my player.. Pretty much every regular dvd that I have rented.

If anyone knows please help me out. I am wondering if i should return it or not Thanks.

Not yet because I want to find out if this is normal or not first.

Default How Severely Scratched?

For the S350 to have such a consistant problem reading DVDs (you say 15 different discs) and then skipping ahead to the next chapter is not normal. How does it handle rental Blu ray discs?

Then again, unless you post pictures, we won't know how badly scratched these discs are. I find it hard to believe that you would be so unlucky to get 15 discs so severely scratched to cause the problem you're experiencing.

But I guess anything is possible, right?

My money is on that there is something wrong with your player.

some were pretty bad and some weren't... blu-rays worked fine. I am going to take it back and try to get a new player and hope this doesn't happen anymore.

How does the player usually handle movies that skip?

I have had my 350 since last November, and have not had any problems with DVD playback at all, and I've played quite a number (certainly much more than 15) of old and even a few brand new DVDs on it without any problems whatsoever. Of course, BD playback has been great.

Let us know how your new 350 works out for you.

I had only one instance of a SD DVD skipping. The player paused for an instant and then jumped ahead a few seconds. It did this a couple times. It turned out the 'skipping' disc was dirty, and after cleaning, played fine.

The skipping problem occurred with firmware version .010. I've since updated to v .013, and then v .015. Haven't had any skipping problems with any type of disc since.

What world do you live in where people handle rental discs with absolute care? I want to move there.
