Alita won't be like those two films from what I saw. It's a film I love a good bit but it's also not doing anything special in the overall w/o the tech. It's just a continuation of what was there before and making that next logical step forward. Salazar's performance won't push Alita to be where BR or The Matrix is or was. Though it's a damn fine performance but it's a twofer. Her performance is there but not cuz of her. It's replicated by artists. It's a a shared symbiotic relationship based on how Rodriguez may have wanted it. Who knows. Saying that, the point of even her face being CGI is that she isn't human. Her body isn't human. So I get why they'd want her all to be CGI. To have that "off" aspect of her to always be there. And it works. I don't know about haunting either. Again.. this one of those things where fanaticism starts to go edge disturbing for me. Last edited by Mr. Chaverria; 04-08-2019 at 01:57 AM. |

I think it’ll age well because underneath the effects and action there is plenty else going on, IMHO. You just have to peel back the orange a little... ![]() |

The only category it’d have a chance in would be visual effects, but that category is pretty much locked down for Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Star Wars Episode IX and two of the following; Captain Marvel, Detective Pikachu, Aladdin, Spider-Man: Far From Home or Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Nevertheless Alita is a spectacular achievement and the most photorealistic CG human so far, and a well realised character to boot.

I think what this movie did was something great. We have to remember this is I would say the best attempt at hollywood adapting a Manga/Anime property and embracing its anime/manga roots and aesthetic. While it didn't break the mold in CG, what it do for motion capture is pretty impressive. Lessons learned from this will affect digital film making going fwd. And if 3D makes a resurgence, lessons learned from this are gonna directly translate into Avatar franchise. People didn't like the eyes but its a strong effort, and can only get more refined. For those who have read the book. Imagine what they could do with the characters arcs Jashugan, or the spectacle of the [Show spoiler] , or anything from the sequel books. A lot of the visual, stylistic and action of the matrix franchise was inspired by anime, so movies like this are a natural progression of pushing the envelope of that corner of cinema. Ghost in the shell 2017 nailed the Franchise Aesthetic look, sort of, but Alita nailed the spirit of a live action anime, and I think its because movies like this, it makes the Idea of the Taika Waititi Led Akira live action movie, and future anime/manga adaptions something to be potentially excited about. Just like what Marvel and or Og spiderman, and to a lesser extent Blade (for me personally) did for comic book movies. |

The key to a great CGI character is making them feel real. Not just look real. |

Just as well Alita was imbued with a fantastic human performance.
