Is the sale supposed to be starting today? Anyone know what time these usually kick off at?

Too bad about Storm of the Century. I don't get it. Kino spends a lot of money restoring old movies no one buys. Storm of the Century is a cult horror title. It's a Stephen King miniseries, and one of the better ones. It would've made an awesome Blu-ray. I mean, who's gonna buy another DVD that's been out for 20 years already? Not me. But I would've bought the Blu-ray. And many others would have, too. Not trying to troll anyone. But I don't see why they won't put the work in on something cool, when it's obviously a good title, something that doesn't already exist. No, I'm not overtly familiar with the process or the work involved. But if there's a title that's worth it, it's a cult horror title. Especially a Stephen King cult horror title.

Why not do it and charge more money for it? That RoninFlix release of Hardware went for $40 bucks new, and everyone bought that. With the right marketing, Storm of the Century could've been a big seller. An amazing performance from Colm Feore.

Well from the sounds of it there's tons of work to do on it and will be expensive. If they sell it expensive, people will ***** and say their usual stupid stuff like "I'll wait for $9.99". People want, but people don't want to pay.

My thoughts exactly... it’s a shame but it sounds like their DVD-only plans are set in stone at this point. It’s a double shame considering the Insider basically confirmed that the work and money put toward Trilogy of Terror II (which required the same type of work Storm of the Century, and which I’ve never seen anyone actually request), was a bit of a waste. They shoulda/coulda put those funds toward SotC.

Yes, it would be a huge project, but... as you said, it’s a cult horror title — a Stephen King cult horror title at that. Scorpion just sold ~1,000+ copies of Opera at $50 a pop (one of which is on my shelf). These cult horror fans generally understand higher prices if the label is transparent about just how much work and money they put into it.

I agree that name recognition alone would probably move a lot of copies of Storm of the Century but I'm guessing Kino doesn't have the time -or even manpower - to meticulously restore it. It's kind of what happens when you take on a TON of properties all at once.

I learned long ago not to overthink potential release news.
Only need to know confirmed release news.

That's the thing: the complainers are going to complain regardless, and they don't buy anything, anyway. But true collectors, the ones who appreciate these titles coming to Blu, will buy. Opera, Hardware...if it's a good package, the true collectors will be interested.

What's the issue with restoring something like this? Can anyone explain? Is it manpower, facility use, money, time? If anyone knows the process, can you share a quick overview of the work something like this would require?

It was described by the insider a month or two back at great length if you search for the post. Short version: shot on film but finished on videotape, there never was a cut film negative and they'd have to create one from all the unedited raw footage at huge cost. The show only exists in SD.

If you know anything about the Star Trek: The Next Generation restoration, it’s basically that. The series was shot on film and finished on video tape, so they’d have to put the whole thing through post-production again.

It’s exactly the process they took the time and money to do for Trilogy of Terror II — the difference being Storm of the Century is longer so it’d take more time and more money.

Definitely a huge project, but it always stings with these finished-on-tape movies/TV shows because it technically could be brought to the modern age in full high definition, but instead the original camera negatives are just wasting away in boxes somewhere.

Also like Star Trek TNG, unlike Trilogy of Terror II, "Storm of the Century" would have computer effects that would have to be redone for HD. I would think the expense of that alone would be more than Kino could -- or should -- spend on such a release.

Or they could just up-res the CGI shots. Didn't The X-Files do that with some of their effects? Mind you, I don't know how much CGI is in this film.

They did that with the Blus of Seaquest DSV, and the results ain't pretty. 90s CGi + upres = Owww!

It wouldn't be preferred, but it would be better then nothing. Again though, it depends on how much CGI is in this film.

The special effects are the reason why Stargate SG-1 hasn't been - and probably never will be - released on Blu-ray despite the huge popularity of the show. I love the show but I don't want ugly upres transfers of it.

I'm grateful Kino took the time to restore Trilogy II. I like it more than the first movie.

Can't wait to upgrade my VHS!

Are there any other USA Network movies in the pipeline? They seem to be scattered between Paramount and Universal. Scream Factory is doing Strays, so we've got two of them on the way.
