![]() I'm not sure who owns the rights too Shoeshine. It used to be with Janus Films but I tried searching for an answer online but couldn't find one. I hope someone can help out us old school CC fans by finding this, and other De Sica titles, owners and availability. And while we're at it, more Truffaut please. Two English Girls had a Criterion LD release so keeping the fingers crossed. |

After years of reading about, but never seeing a film by, Wim Wenders I watched Paris, Texas and The American Friend in the dying days of Filmstruck... My love of road films and films where nothing really happens collided. The Road trilogy was ordered in the next half off sale.
Of course I just got around to it, Alice in the Cities was also fantastic! The unhurried pace and dryness seems to share space with two of my favorite directors; Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismaki. Interestingly enough all three seem to focus heavily on music as well as the mundane (It was thanks to this that I found Jarmusch, as I discovered Tom Waits and Criterion dvd's around the same time...) yet they still retain their own unique touches. |

So, this is an OT shot in the dark, as racking my brain for nearly the last 24 hours has not been fruitful. Many of you are so knowledgeable about film history, and physical media, so I’m hoping one of you can assuage my mind.
Within the last six months, maybe even the past three, I saw a letter written by Martin Scorsese to his film industry friends, circa 1980, about the need to act to preserve our film history. He cautioned them about film nitrate deterioration. I can distinctly see the letter in my head, with his “Martin Scorsese” letterhead. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the source of this letter. I know Scorsese has spearheaded the World Cinema Project, and that he has multiple films with Criterion (The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence. We talk about a myriad of subjects here that are either directly related to, or tangentially related to Criterion, and filmmaking in general. Maybe the impetus for my reading this letter occurred here. I’m going to do some more searching, but Scorsese has been brought up a good deal in our Criterion discussion, and my timeframe might be a little fuzzy. I could spend another day looking through search results. Maybe somebody can cut out the middleman, and just point to a copy of the letter online. Googling his name, with a variety of terms (film preservation, restoration, 1980 letter, etc), as well as the organizations he either co-founded (The Film Foundation), or sits on the Board of Directors (The National Film Preservation Foundation). No dice as of yet. Mr. Scorsese’s communication with Robert Altman, Akira Kurosawa, etc come up readily, but inexplicably, this historic communique remains difficult to track down. I thought I bookmarked it on my iPhone or laptop, but it’s not there. I watch a good number of documentaries. I just can’t remember which might have covered this. Thanks in advance. I’d love to re-read what he had to say. Film preservation is something I really want to champion when I start writing. |

Never mind, I found it. TCM presented the first annual Robert Osborne Award to Martin Scorsese for his work on film preservation. The letter in question was referenced in a video teaser on the channel in advance of the ceremony. The original letter was part of a petition Scorsese, his longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker, along with staff members Mark del Costello and Donna Gigliotti sent to Kodak asking them to make permanent color motion picture film.
Here's the text, in case anybody is interested (copied from archive.org's crawl of The Independent): [Show spoiler] More than 200 people associated with the theatrical motion picture industry signed the petition, including Saul Bass, Bernardo Bertolucci, Peter Bogdanovich, Stan Brakhage, Kevin Brownlow, Ellen Burstyn, Vincent Canby, John Cassavetes, Michael Cimino, Jill Clayburgh, Francis Ford Coppola, Judith Crist, George Cukor, Robert DeNiro, Brian DePalma, Mia Farrow, Federico Fellini, Jane Fonda, Milos Forman, Jodie Foster, Ben Gazzara, Jean-Luc Godard, Elia Kazan, Sergio Leone, George and Marcia Lucas, Sidney Lumet, Leonard Maltin, Malcolm McDowell, Liza Minelli, and Paul Newman. Also signing were Jack Nicholson, Joseph Papp, Arthur Penn, Sydney Pollack, Otto Preminger, Burt Reynolds, Gina Rowlands, Telly Savalas, Thelma Schoonmaker, Paul Schrader, Steven Spielberg, Mary Steenburgen, Barbra Streisand, Lily Tomlin, Francois Truffaut, King Vidor, Lina Wertmuller, Irwin Winkler, William Wyler, and many other directors, producers, actors, actresses, and film critics. |

Well, I'm going bite the bullet and buy a Roku streaming device so I can use my Criterion Channel membership. Something I can't do with the multiple FireSticks I have in my house.
Any recommendations as to which Roku to buy? I'd prefer to get the cheapest one that will do the job. I don't care about playing games or anything like that. I appreciate any advice you guys and gals can provide. Thanks. |
