I feel this will be an ongoing thing now. Next up, snowflakes will complain that having a girl or woman as a princess undermines their right to equality. Disney will probably ending up wiping 60% of their old catalogue.

There is no such thing as preservation of films anymore. The only way you can do that is buy uncut on disc in the first place.

Speak for yourself, money buys quite a bit of companionship.

Ah Tom And Jerry. Them and The Pink Panther were a big part of my childhood. Dungeons And Dragons was my fave though.

I used to love them all mate - Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote/Roadrunner, Dastardly & Muttley, etc.
The BBC and ITV used to put them on regularly during the weekends in the 70's, and as a small kid at the time, I was glued to the TV whenever they were on. Unfortunately we had no video recorder at that time.

Not really, the Studio controls the distribution of content. So the Studio would have to modify and redistribute that content. The Streaming Providers have no control over modifying their distributed content.

Ahhhhhhh, yes. Happy days.

Got my (well my parents) first video recorder in 1982 I think. A top loader with chunky hold down switches.

Did you watch Worzel Gummidge?

If the studios tell the streaming providers, their licensees, to instead offer a newly modified version, then that it is what the streaming providers will provide to their customers. They will even delete an item altogether if so instructed as with the episode "Stark Raving Dad" from season 3 of The Simpsons.

In case you have not been paying attention, increasingly the studio IS the streaming provider. The post of mine that you quoted specifically refers to the content owner's ability to modify their content.

Was in the local Hendersonville, NC Walmart today and noticed they had installed the new disc displays similar to the one I posted about several months ago (see below). This one did not have a break in it like the one in Waynesville NC. I had very little time but did notice they had a section with only UHD/4K Blu-ray in it. Seemed much better organized than the Waynesville store. Will take some pictures on the next visit.

I didn't get my first video until around 1986. It was a Philips, which developed a few faults after about 2 years. I've had Sony's ever since - never had issues with any of them, and they lasted for years.

I do remember Worzel Gummidge. Didn't watch it on a regular basis to be fair, but yes I remember it well.

I thought about posting just the pertinent excerpts on this subject from some of the TOS for the benefit of other readers but then decided it would be just a waste of my time.

Wait until you're a little older and when you are retired, then you can enjoy your second childhood. This time around without parents or older siblings bossing you around.

Mine is well under way.

If they even bothered to read it, they would just pretend that the author of these restrictive clauses didn't really mean them. Those clauses are just there to be there, superfluous legalese filler material- makes the contract fluffier and fuller, you see.

I don’t think I will be able to retire to be honest. Will be paying off a mortgage until I’m in my late 50’s. They have raised the retirement age to 70 anyway.

To be honest, I think I will still be getting bossed around off my sisters until I kick the bucket.

Actually, Turner Entertainment did that in the 90s but continued releasing the original versions on laserdisc, at least in the US. Similarly, all of Tom & Jerry are available uncut on DVD in the US...except for two missing shorts, which oddly are available in the UK on DVD, uncut (and much of everything else that we have uncut is censored over there.)

None of this makes any sense, and no one is actually asking for any of this stuff to be censored other than clueless executives who apparently base their decision making on thin, totally spurious evidence, but anyone who wants it can still easily get all of it.

As for the Dumbo situation, I haven’t seen any actual source given that states Disney is going to do anything to the film, just a bit in the Hollywood Reporter article that doesn’t even indirectly credit a source; it just appears to be pulled from out of nowhere. So who is saying it? Otherwise, there’s just a 2011 comment from Iger about Song of the South, which they obviously weren’t going to include on the service (that’s nothing new and unsurprising.) If they were to censor Dumbo, why would they merely delete one character and not the others, who are essentially the same? Or why wouldn’t they simply delete the audio that mentions the name Jim Crow instead?

Doesn’t make any sense, so I doubt the report until there’s any real evidence and, once again, I’ve never heard anyone ask for this because 99.9% of the people don’t care.

There are numerous articles reporting the cut scene from Dumbo for Disney's streaming service:

https://insidethemagic.net/2019/04/d...ong-south-ba1/

https://movieweb.com/song-of-the-sou...lus-streaming/

https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a2...-of-the-south/

https://screenrant.com/disney-plus-s...row-scene-cut/

https://wdwnt.com/2019/04/disney-to-...movie-library/

https://comicbook.com/movies/2019/04...-of-the-south/

https://shadowandact.com/song-of-the...ene-with-crows

https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...the-south-film

https://decider.com/2019/04/23/song-...e-disney-plus/

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/ne...disney-1203624

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...181330560.html

^"The 1946 film Song of the South will not be offered on the $7-per-month service and the Jim Crow scene in 1941’s Dumbo will be edited out, Boardwalk Times reports and The Hollywood Reporter confirms. "

https://www.moviefone.com/2019/04/22...the-south-out/

The source article itself:

https://boardwalktimes.net/song-of-t...y-ca2c1eae2a50

Are these 13 citations enough for you? The story was first published by The Boardwalk Times and it was picked up and reported by at least 12 other websites. Seems like a whole lot of places trust this source along with the confirmation by The Hollywood Reporter.

Incidentally, the cut scene was not recreated for the Tim Burton Dumbo remake, either:

"The company also doesn't plan to include a scene from the 1941 animated film Dumbo featuring a crow named Jim Crow, a reference to a 19th century blackface character that later became the name of the segregation laws enacted following the Reconstruction era. The scene also does not appear in Tim Burton's live-action remake of the original animated pic. Boardwalk Times also first reported the scene's absence."

^from the Holloywood Reporter article linked above

Lastly, it is more likely that 99.9% of people do not know about the cuts being made to Dumbo, so of course they can not care about that which they do not know. Unless someone conducts a scientific poll, we will never know how many people care about this cut scene. Further, how many care, or not, hardly excuses this revisionist BS and it underscores the evils that streaming can do to even classic films such as the original animated Dumbo.

You could always reprioritize your expenses. Since your income is the most important factor, spend less on media, and save more.
