I think Kino’s only real mistake here was releasing a BD-only version at all. Force people to buy the combo pack if they want the remaster.

For movies that have been out for 10 years or more, C$10/15 respectively. For a re-scan, C$15/20 is right price for me. Last Christmas season I saw 4K Gladiator, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryans, etc. at C$15; that's a good bargain.

C$30, I think is too high given that Hannibal is almost 20 years old. It does not really matter if it is coming from KL or a larger publisher. I certainly appreciate the effort but the price has to be marketable. Not to mention that this is geared mostly for people who are upgrading to a better PQ.

The BD from the same 4K re-scan is on sale at C$22. This very BD, however, is already included in the 4K purchase (C$30). If KL really wants to move UHD sales, the 4K should be priced the same as BD because that will entice BD buyers into buying 4K pack instead. KL will only recover 4K investment cost IF the 4K sells. And why would anyone buy 4K if there are so many cheaper alternatives available?

There is a diminishing customer base. Most people have the DVD since this is 2001 movie. Some would have BD. Fewer would even have the Hannibal Lector Collection BD.
DVD > BD (MGM) > BD (KL) > UHD (KL)

So KL's strategy to sell a better PQ version of the 18 yr old movie as an upgrade is to price it exactly like a new movie release? KL's marketing/sales is falling into the same old strategy of, 'we must recover the investment early by pricing it high', instead of 'let's build a loyal customer base by continuing to offer excellent titles at outstanding price.'

I do love the movie though . . .
This is exactly why the boutique labels may sit out on UHD. None of them could possibly make a profit according to your threshold requirements. The costs to produce UHD titles make value pricing a losing proposition today.

On the other side of the scale, some of us understand and are more than willing to pay realistic prices that make the endeavor profitable.

Some of us don't even have arbitrary guidelines that place pricing thresholds on movies' vintages.

Joe public really doesn't give a shit about quality anymore as long as they get to see the movie and that's the sad part. They'll go the cheapest and easiest route as long as they see it. Goes hand in hand with the "throw away society" we live in.

UHD (at least today) is really not a product for people who are unwilling to pay a premium for a better-quality version.

Exactly. Especially considering what it costs to do 4K at home right. At least on the hardware end. It's a lot more than Joe Public is going to want to spend.

Replace 'UHD' with 'Bluray' and your statement still works well

My store got it's stock earlier today. Should have come yesterday along with Battleship and Ghost in the Shell but this separate shipment must have been because of the delay. Only 3 copies but it will be restocked quickly with Universal distributing.

That’s what I thought when the title was first announced. I mean, in principle it’s nice but I’d think they’d want to maximize sales of the UHD combo pack as much as possible... and releasing a newly remastered standalone bluray for a cheaper price right next to the combo pack is an odd business choice.

"Force people"? Really? That's rather fascist, don't you think?

It's making a product available for purchase, not holding a gun to a consumer's head.

Robert Harris continues to confound me. Clearly, he is very knowledgeable about film, yet continually he proves to be completely worthless as a reviewer. It's really quite something.
