Looks like it's being overseen by Grover Crisp (hence why they're going with their local in-house studio for color grading), so should be fine. I'm assuming Sony outsourced the scanning to save money...

Precisely what I was going to say. With Crisp’s oversight, I haven’t a sliver of a concern.

The grading is performed by Grover Crisp / Sheri Eisenberg.
Ritrovata performed the scan and the restoration.

But grading is the one area Ritrovata struggle with, so again, I think we’re good here.

RIP Peter Fonda. It's a sad coincidence that I re-watched Easy Rider about a week before Fonda passed, for the first time on the Criterion Blu-ray. Obviously, very iconic & ground-breaking film. And, as usual with Criterion restorations, this film looks great.

Technical review:

PQ was sharp & crisp - for the most part. That being said, the outdoor Mardi gras scenes (especially the ones at night) were definitely rough - but that may have had something to do with the limitations of the film print. I.e., maybe they couldn't improve on this that much.

Story:

Very good time capsule of the late '60's counter-culture era.

I really liked the quick editing cuts - which were very innovative re: the time period.

Truly amazing rock soundtrack; IIRC, this is one of the first times rock/pop music was used in a film. Favorite tracks here included: Steppenwolf's "The Pusher" and "Born to be Wild" in the beginning; The Byrd's "Wasn't Born To Follow"; "If 6 was 9" by Hendrix; and others. Incredible choices here, and these really "fit" the scenes they were played over - well-done.

Nicholson had a great, early role here as the drunken, small-town lawyer George Hansen. Very funny dialogue here, especially when Fonda asked him if he had a helmet (which he would need to ride on the back of the motorcycle) and he matter-of-factly stated, "Oh, I have a helmet!"....and it turned out to be his old high school football helmet - LOL.

One of the most memorable & bizarre scenes in cinema was the ER cemetery sequence, when Wyatt, Billy, & the two women (Toni Basil & Karen Black) are heavily tripping - all superimposed over a woman reading a religious text. This was a creepy & intentionally unsettling sequence.

Interesting that a young Phil Spector had a cameo in the beginning.

The restoration was done by Sony (it's the same master as the 2009 Sony release) and the Mardi Gras scenes were shot in 16mm as opposed to 35mm.

Yep. Here's an interview with Hopper from Interview magazine:

But then I discovered that we only have two weeks, so even though we didn’t have a go-project yet, we rushed and got a bunch of friends together and went to shoot it in New Orleans on 16mm. The whole acid trip and all of the New Orleans stuff was all shot on 16mm over four days.

For some one whose first time to buy Easy Rider on blu-ray, which release is better the Sony Digibook or Criterion?

I noticed they have the same PQ.

I was poking around a local B&N glancing over their criterion sale items, and was reminded that I have not yet picked up the UK 4k uhd of this title. I glanced at the typical online screencaps, and noticed the Sony 4k uhd looks noticeably brighter in many scenes, with some significant differences in the color palette. I'm surprised how little discussion exists on the topic, over the last two years, unless I'm just not finding the correct 4k uhd thread on the title. Anyone own both the 2019 UK 4k uhd and the criterion release, and have thoughts or preferences relating to the technical aspects of the 4k uhd? I'm leaning toward just importing the 4k uhd package since I believe it includes the sony standard blu as well, the encode and color timing of which I believe largely match the old criterion disc.

Picked up the used digibook. Not bad a little grainy. First saw in theater on New Year’s Eve 1969. Inspired, in 1973 road my Triumph from Michigan to California, man I’m old!

Aye mate. I own both iterations of this classic. I can heartily recommend the 4k UHD version. It is a revelation in my opinion. What stood out to me besides the clarity of image and intuitively correct color grading is the GRAIN..... oh so pleasing. Incredibly filmic in my opinion. I'm on 65 lg oled, panny 820, and can say it has never looked so good as this newest uhd version. I've owned every home video iteration of this classic and I think this will probably be the best we'll get. Cheers!

Yes, I did go ahead and import the 4k uhd last summer. I agree with you completely in your assessment. The 4k is my go-to and easily the best it’s ever looked.

I'm glad you agree. Alot of us have different av systems so I'm never 100% sure if pq differences are due to the disc itself or just how it looks on my system compared to others. The Criterion looked great but I thought there was an obvious inprovement. And I did think the grain management was stellar. Adios Amigo
