I tried to watch Rome for the first time in between re-watching seasons of Game of Thrones a couple months ago, and it did not play well in comparison. It felt like Rome is to GoT as "I, Claudius" is to Rome. Just in terms of filmic style and production value, it felt rough.

I didn't finish the first season of Rome. Now I guess I really should finish the series, just so I've given it a more fair chance and to know that I did.

Anyway. I mostly only say this because "think Rome, but with fantasy elements sprinkled throughout" feels so amusingly quaint in hindsight.

I think that holds true for the later GOT seasons, after the show exploded in profits and production value (I’m guessing post-Red Wedding), but Season 1 of GOT feels very similar to Rome. It’s partly why I got into the show around the time it premiered (was looking forward to a good follow-up to Rome). Even the battle sequences through S2 I remember looked exactly like Rome’s in their low-budget effects and presentation.
