Now I am confused. I always thought that "Bootlegging" was more or less the same than piracy: Inferior and cheap products produced by unkown companies with very poor quality.

But Almost Famous have been released by Sony (a company famous for fighting piracy), the picture quality of this BD is good and the audio quality is even better (Dolby TrueHD). Only a few supplements have been added, though.

BTW the UK version is the longer cut (IMO the better version) not the theatrical one.

so anyone who could enlight me on why this release of Almost Famous is a bootleg despite being released by a major studio with very good audio and video?

PS: I didn't notice the word "Bootleg" at the beginning either. I'll pay more attention next time.

The UK Blu-ray release says 'Untitled' as the title instead of Almost Famous.

The Bootleg Cut is just what they call the Director's Edition DVD, which includes the Untitled cut and the theatrical cut. As far as the Blu-ray (Untitled), I bought it and traded it as I couldn't see much difference from my DVD (notice the title on the case). I am hoping the US release looks better, because I love the movie. The TrueHD soundtrack is suppossed to be great. I can't comment on that though, I wasn't running lossless at the time.

Edit: And for the price those Amazon sellers are selling that version, maybe I should have kept the Blu-ray and sold the DVD!!!

I compared several scenes from my old DVD and the BD. While Almost Famous doesn't look as sharp as let's say "I am Legend" (never meant to look like that) it looks noticeable better than DVD. And as I have said the Dolby TrueHD is a great upgrade.

so why is this movie considered a "bootleg"?

BTW I got Almost Famous for about 11 bucks taking advantage of a good deal.

I compared several scenes as well, and saw 0 difference. Only movie I have ever owned that I can say this about.

It's not considered a bootleg, it is just the title they chose for it.

BTW I got Almost Famous for about 11 bucks taking advantage of a promotion.

There was a special edition that came out with a disc of the regular movie, plus a disc that had 35 minutes of extra footage. I'm assuming they called it the "boot leg" version because of the music connection.
