Default Subwoofers with LFE

I don't know if something like this has already been posted, but I wanted to share a link about subwoofers with LFE. I bought a subwoofer with LFE and and I have a Sony str dg1000 recievier with polk rm10s. It made a world of difference in my sound and it now sounds just like the movies.

The sub by the way is an infinity ps212 and this thing rocks.

Just so you know LFE stands for Low Frequency Effect, all power subs have LFE. Congrats on the sub and happy listening.

My previous sub did not have an on off LFE switch. When you turn this one on, you don't have to set the crossover on your reciever or your sub. When it is off, you do.

Almost everything in that linked article is rubbish, btw. It's 9 years old and virtually everything it says is 'wrong' with bass management is not the case with even the cheapest modern AV receiver.

My simple point is that when I listen with my LFE on, my low frequencies are phenominal!!!

What kind of receiver do you have? It seems you need to upgrade your receiver if you need to turn on "LFE" to have your subwoofer work.

My reciever works fine. It is a Sony Str dg1000. My base worked before, but when I turn LFE on, every thing adjusts on its on and the base is better, much much better. Almost like it calculates it perfectly.

Again, when the LFE is off, I have to ajust the crosever but when it is on, the manual crossoever on the sub is of no effect because it is automatically calculated.

I can't find a manual for this online, but it sounds like this 'LFE' switch is just a crossover enable/disable switch - there's nothing magical about it and every subwoofer has a method to adjust the crossover.

Turning LFE on in your case would just disable the crossover and let your receiver do it - just as everybody else would do unless they are using their sub in-line with their speakers at speaker level rather than line level. Please tell me if there's something I'm missing here!

edit: Yes, I found this quote on the Crutchfield site:

Quote:
Note: The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE/Normal" switch is in the "LFE" position.
So I repeat, all this LFE switch does is disable the internal crossover. It's not 'automatically calculating' your crossover point. It's just bypassing it so the receiver has full control of the crossover point. Therefore, you do still need to set your crossover point in your receiver with the LFE switch on. It's likely set to 80Hz by default, which is probably exactly right for your system anyhow.

Yeah, the reciever handles everything and the sound is much more effecient, my surrounds and everything. The sound is a whole lot cleaner and so is the bass with more effectiveness and authority.

Sounds to me, then, that you probably never had your previous subwoofer set up correctly. Good to hear that the new one is going well for you though.
