I bet they expected the raves out of Sundance to carry this.

This isn't getting the second wave of momentum The Big Sick got heading into its release.
I wonder if it’s a film that got a bit overhyped at Sundance, as doesn’t seem to be connecting quite as strongly with critics: it has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70 on Metacritic. Not bad by any means, but certainly not on the same level as Big Sick (with 98% on RT and 86 on MC) to give it that new momentum as the release is approaching.

Anyway saw this tonight at the Regal early access screening: no trailers but a live stream Q+A with Mindy Kaling after which was cool (loved that they actually found an old clip of Emma Thompson doing stand up for use in this movie), and it’s a good movie with sharp performances and script, but I do feel like Amazon might have overpaid with a record Sundance deal. As I think it will be a film that most people who see it like, but won’t have quite the breakout audience WOM or “one of the best movies of the year” type reviews that Big Sick got in order to stand out in a crowded summer movie marketplace.
