that doesn't make any sense for YOUR wallet, but if that's what you want to do go for it. I mean it's smarter to up-grade the HDD but if you're wanting to help a friend out then you don't really need our opinion. It's a decision of "is this friend worth $150 bucks, or not..."

well, actually, if you reread my original post, you will see that i didnt ask for your opinions of me buying a new one. i asked what i should do to prepare myself for the switch and i just wanted to be warned if there were any major flaws in the 80's. im basically going to buy a new, better ps3 for $150 and some people are acting like im crazy. i think its something called upgraditis and if im not mistaken, many people on this board have it!

Use the backup utility on your old PS3 to backup to an external USB hard drive. Then restore this data to your new 80Gb PS3 when you get it. Almost everything will transfer over. Some game saves are locked to the particular PS3. And any PSN movies you have rented or 'purchased' will not work on the new PS3.

As mentioned above, deactivate your old PS3 on your PSN account before you give it to your friend.

And yeah, I see your point with your plan. In terms of just you alone, it'd make more sense to just buy a new hard drive. And people aren't being unreasonable by recommending that path to you. But yeah, there's this concept of friendship. And PS3's are much more fun to play with friends anyway.

Yeah, but people upgrade to gain a significant new feature, buying an 80GB PS3 is not an upgrade. It is a waste of $150.

Samsung 250GB HDD - $60

PlayStation 3 Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller - $43

Total cost $502. Final product, PS3 250GB, 1 Sixaxis and 1 DS3 and one spare 40GB HDD.

Using your method you get: One PS3 80GB, 1 DS3, total cost $549.

Doesn't make any sense to do that.

Yeah but that doesn't help his friend like he said he is going to. And maybe he has no need for that much memory. Anyways just back up your data, and recliam your ID and downloads when you get you new 80GB.

Yeah it does, he has a spare controller, so his friend can come over and play split screen...

yeah... like someone else said, i dont even need close to that much memory. i use my ps3 for games and blus, thats it. i havent even come close to using my 40gb. also, like someone else said, its better to play with friends. im helping him out. not only is he my friend, but he is like a brother, so i have no problem shelling out $150 for a ps3 that i wanted to get anyways.

on another note as well, there is a deal going on right now (see thread) that best buy is giving you a $50 dollar giftcard and guitar hero 3 for free with the purchase of a 80gb ps3. so essentially, ill be getting 80gb ps3, another DS controller since i already have one and GH3, all for $100. thats not a deal?!

Instead of trying to justify your decision, just do it because you've already learned there is no reason to upgrade. Just as there isn't particularly a reason TO upgrade, besides wanting to help your friend out. But don't fool yourself into thinking that you're somehow upgrading anything but the HDD, because everything else is exactly the same beside the extra DS3.

Its an upgrade, no matter how slight of an upgrade it is. Others wanted him to upgrade his harddrive, and thats what he is doing in a round about way, and helping a friend at the same time, for those that don't understand, I have to assume you don't have any real life friends. Oh and I am sure he appreciates you explaning his situation to him.

If it was just the simple matter of helping a friend out because he couldn't afford to buy a PS3, then alright. But that's not entirely what he was asking, based on the initial post. I would've been concerned if someone DIDN'T present the alternative of just personally upgrading his own console, especially after not mentioning in the first post that his friend was looking to purchase a PS3 but didn't want to spend the full amount on one.

Since this isn't the case, and it's now him just wanting to help a friend out, then it's a different situation. If he feels he really wants to help his friend out, then more power to him. But to put a dollar amount to a 40GB upgrade, with a $50 Best Buy giftcard, a Guitar Hero 3 bundle, makes it sound like he needs justification for the upgrade.

i dont know if you guys can read or not...

the first post, i will admit was a little vague which is why i already admitted it and explained the whole story, but people are still trying to say what im trying to do is a waste of money. please go back and read the first post and try to understand. i never once asked "should i get a new ps3". matter of fact the first words are "i have decided". let me translate that in dumb... its a done deal. i didnt need any consultation on whether or not to do it. all i asked is if there were any known problems with the 80 that the 40 doesnt have to save myself from upgrading to a worse machine and also what i need to do to prepare. hopefully you guys can understand that...

let me see if i understand. you dont think that is a deal, but you think i should go upgrade the hard drive for no reason, not help my friend and just have the same old system? i just want a new one. i never said there was a good reason for it. i just want a new ps3. why is it such a big deal to you guys?

GET CLEAR! If you want to buy the ps3 and give your pal your old one go for it. If you want us to convince you it's a good idea you're in the wrong boards. I love my brothers and friends... but I don't throw PS3's at them all the time.

You clearly don't understand I don't think any amount of explanation is going to help you comprehend that people WERE trying to help you. For some reason you became extremely defensive and have now downgraded to simply insulting people.

Don't worry what other people say. Make sure you back everything up and then you can Redownload all your Games that you downloaded and also add-ons. Keep in Mind, Singstar songs can not be downloaded on another PS3, so if you have that game. You're SOL.

But Good on ya for helping a friend, and some people make it seem like a friend isn't worth $150, and that's nothing to help a friend out. Not like you're helping him out of a real jam... but it's something.
