The reason I find those 2, Papillon and Midnight Express, so good is because they are in foreign prisons where the rules (lack of) are different. Way scarier, way more dangerous, no medical care, poop for food and all in all...much more hopless. The efforts to escape are truly epic.

Just thought of another Classic, "Bad Boys" (1983) with Sean Penn. If you haven't seen this one your missing out. Realistic and gritty, see it.

The Concrete Jungle
Chained Heat
Barbed Wire Dolls

There are tons of them, and they all have very compelling stories.

Oh yeah, gotta add Undisputed (Ving Rhames/Wesley Snipes). One of the few movies where I was actually cheering for the bad guy! Iceman!

Well my all-time favorite movie is a prision movie so The Shawshank Redemption

Every time I watch The Green Mile, I almost cry.

One of my favorite Stallone films is Lock Up. Never get tired of watching that.

I liked American History X as well - got that pre-ordered.

American Me(1992) was also pretty good - Inspired by a true story about the Mexican Gangs in Folsom State Prison

"Blood In Blood Out" was a good movie, much of which took place in prison.

Another MUST if you like the genre...

Midnight Express (1978)

The true story of Billy Hayes (Brad Davis) is brought to life by Oliver Stone's Academy Award-winning screenplay recounting the young American's experience in a Turkish prison. When Hayes is caught attempting to smuggle drugs out of Turkey, the courts decide to make an example out of him and sentence him to 20 years in prison. With little hope of ever getting out, Hayes decides to attempt a daring escape. Co-stars Randy Quaid and John Hurt.
Seeing this movie young taught me to be VERY WELL BEHAVED when traveling abroad. Terrifying!
