Animation and videogames are no different than live-action when deliberate casting decisions are made.

But anyway, it's in a matter of "you do you" in the end.

I don't understand those who wouldn't buy a sub-only release, but to each his or her own...
Watching dubs I get the same feeling I did as kid watching Godzilla or Gamera movies where the words never synced to the mouths. I always knew something was off and I was missing something and always wanted to know what that was, finally watching shows in the original language I now just find much more enjoyable and feel like I am actually getting the full experience I was missing out on.

Some dubs are more awkward to me than others but I have no problem enjoying them. I am more likely to rewatch something in English since I have a lot of friends who like dubs and anime groupwatches are fun.

I went from loving this show in high school when I first learned about it (2001 or so) and now finding it to be annoying and overrated. I guess in some respect I find many elements of it to be more complicated than they need to be just for the sake of creating complexity.

Unpopular opinion inbound:
I always thought the show started good but went down the drain with the introduction of Asuka. She is easily one of the most annoying anime characters. And I understand her character arch but I have no interest in her. Rei is as bland of a character as possible but at least the overall story does tie in to why she is the way she is.

All this aside, I just wish the originals were restored for the fans of it with the original subtitles (the latter which will likely never happen). Rebuild 1.1 (or whatever) was absolutely perfect to me but that is the only one I really watch anymore as I get older. I think it has exactly what I loved about those first few episodes of the show and put it into a short movie with some polished/great animation. After that, the Rebuild series just seemed to once again create something more complex just for kicks. I blame all that crap on Anno though.

I never got into NGE. It wasn't on my radar at all, since I was into 80's anime and pretty much ignored the late 90's stuff that arrived with DVD. I've gone back and started to watch the 1995-2006 stuff that I missed while in HS and college, but NGE hasn't been on my list until now, since it's available now on Netflix. Right now though, I'm watching Deltora Quest, an all-too-typical anime adaptation of a children's fantasy novel series that I hadn't heard of at all until I found the anime on my Hulu suggestions.

Mmmm you're misunderstanding what I mean

Simply talking about why one doesn't like something is not starting the debate. If someone says "I don't like this I'm going to do this instead" and a dub watcher takes it personally and takes issue and comes for them, that's what I'm talking about and I see it all the time. That holds true when switching courts by the way. "it's okay when WE do it" etc etc

The shoe is on the other foot with people who want to make this silly mess an issue in the first place.

That's right, and it's not personal until someone makes it personal from either perspective. And what I explained earlier, I'm seeing a specific subset of the dub crowd doing just so and it's irritating.

Personally I love Fooly Cooly's english dub because it's an excellent approximation of the Japanese. It's wonderful. Barring that I have no interest in seeking any out because I simply do not care, and that goes for any work in any language.

"ThE AuDIO iS sYNCeD LAtER it DOESn'T mATtER" lmao to say a work, in this case a piece of animation, doesn't have an intended original language track is nonsensical.

See this is the thing, it's like a bunch of justification for personal insecurities over cartoon consumption. I don't have to debate preference anything with anybody because I watch what I want and don't care. For as many times as I've seen shit stirred (and had it attempted with me, by the way) it goes one ear out the other or I'm all like "lol ok"

There's also the inverse of this, when something was made to be another language in the first place. The first Blood movie is like that for example. It has Japanese and English speaking characters in it.

Another thing to note is in the video game world, Resident Evil and No More Heroes. BOTH of these games were intended and made to be played in English with Japanese subtitles. Later on, in No More Heroes' case, they added an optional Japanese language track for people who don't like subtitles.

And that's what it boils down to; English dubs are for people who don't like subtitles or have trouble following along. It's not a knock to those people, it's not a knock on the artform, etc. That's why doubling down and even throwing a fit about it makes no sense to me.

If one thinks that someone calling alternate language anime dubs is a personal attack, that's on them. And it's the same thing when someone talks about the inverse.

The debate won't die because children keep it going. The ball is in dub's court currently.

What is the difference in a sub watcher "taking the bait" over a dub user? Sub users are just automatically in the right because it is the native language? I speak English and like to hear the characters speak my language. It's pretty simple really. Especially when the dub usually adds so much more personality to the character. So many Japanese voice actors all sound exactly the same, especially the female characters.

I haven't watch Eva since I was in a senior back in 2008. Honestly, its one of those anime that I have to be in the right mood for. I was super into it when I was a teenager in the 2000s and watched it like three times.

I never cared for the Rebuild movies. They have nice pretty animation, but I never see the point of them. They are like how the 3D animated Berserk movies are IMO.

That is Miyamura Yuuko. She is Asuka's seiyuu. This is her voice when talking normally;

And that is Hayashibara Megumi, who voiced Rei. Arguably the most prolific voice actress of the 90s. This is her voice when talking normally;

I think they sound different, but that's me, and a few others, I take it.

It depends heavily on the type of anime. In any cutesy girl themed anime, I will definitely agree that almost all the voices sound alike in that horrifyingly annoying high-pitched tone. But generally speaking, in most anime you can tell the difference between Japanese voice actors/actresses.

Although I will always prefer to at least try a dub before viewing sub (on occasion I do have to switch because of simply how awful a specific dub is) I will also add that America is severely lacking in the anime voice actor department. English dubs would be leaps and bounds greater than they are now if all the American companies would hire new voice actors so that we aren't stuck with the same 10-20 voices over and over again. Japan definitely has a more diverse voice actor pool than America, probably any country. I will not take that credit away from them.

Just out of curiosity does the sub only crowd think there are bad Japanese voice actors? Have you ever thought a English actor was better playing the same character? I'm honestly interested.
