Not even the big bay area one? In 89 I think. I remember that one. And a few other one's growing up. Lived in San Jose half my life. Great weather, a few quakes here and there. Then moved to Tracy, an hour east. Weather sucks. Hot during the summer, but the rest is ok.

Believe me I would like nothing better but age, work and kids school just will not allow it. My life is just too far down the path to turn around and start new somewhere else.

I agree whole heartedly on Katrina, also Isidore and Lily a few years ago I was working and walked to work through them. They were pretty much Cat 1 and Tropical Storms so it wasn't that bad, just took a change of clothes with me and changed at work.

It's so much easier said then done. I grew up here, I've got ties here, friends, children, work. Once you get past a certain age, it's very hard to just pick up and leave and start a new life somewhere. When I was 18 I moved around a few different states and it was easy to make friends and set up shop. Now at 30, it's a lot harder to just leave everything behind and go.

(I'm in the same boat as Skywalker, just 60 miles south of him.)

Nah..... it's a trade off... the weather here is pretty awesome the rest of the time. I think almost every area has it's own weather problems. Hurricanes are nasty..... but they USUALLY aren't very frequent. When I was a kid the really big ones only came about once every 15 years. The good news about hurricanes is you usually have plenty enough notice to secure your property as much as possible.... and evacuate if needed.

Man, I live in Kansas.

Our kind of bad weather brings Foxnews to other areas of the country for weeks at a time. We're also smart enough to prepare so billions of FEMA dollars aren't needed to get us a drink of water.

Had a tornado run through my area a couple of years back, knocked out power at my house and surrounding areas for over a week. It also ripped a hangar at my place of employment to shreds. My office (also the server room) was close to being taken out as well.

Besides Earthquakes, Snow and Blizzards. We get everything. Bad. Lightning in 90 degrees with 100% Humidity? Watch out.

I've heard in America you have twisters and huge storms so by that standard I cannot say I have had a run in with bad weather but by our standards I have. Strong winds and bone soaking cold rains, usually just when I need to go to some place on foot and need to be presentable and dry. The weather here is evil and likes to work against me just when I need it not to.

When it comes to disasters requiring mass amounts of emergency assistance... you can't really compare a tornadoe to a hurricane. Even the largest tornadoes usually only inflict severe damage on a hundred or so square miles. A good sized hurricane however, can cause devestaion over more than a thousand square miles.

I'm not saying that one form of disaster is any worse than the other... just logistically speaking... a smaller disaster zone should typically mean less need for emergency assistance.

Up until Katrina, hurricanes for me meant a few days off work. I'd usually sit outside and watch them for hours, they are such a beautiful thing to watch! I've ridden out plenty of cat 2s and 3s sitting on the back porch with a pack of cigarettes.

You speak the truth, Marquoz.

Tampa's time is coming, and I really hate to say that. We've not had a direct hit (hurricane) in like 100 years...

When I live in NY, Hurricane Gloria's eye passed right over us. It was really awesome going from absolute mayhem (wind and rain) to complete calm and sun for a few minutes... so bizarre.

One time last year, however, when I was up snowboarding at Bear Valley (about three hours from my home), we were snowboarding in a literal blizzard. You couldn't see more than a few feet in front of you. It was so bad we had to stop early, which is a huge disappointment when you're on a one-day kamikaze trip. Driving out of the resort and down into civilization was painstaking, as we literally had to drive about 10 mph for an hour or two due to the visibility. Getting home took about six or seven hours. Not only did we not get a full day of boarding, but we got back way later than normal.
Not to one up you, but it is a one up.

I was at Mammoth once for a FIS race. It was literally about 10 feet of visibility. The mountain was closed (rare for mammoth, even on really bad days). The organizer did not call the race because they hoped it would clear up.

We all brought our race skies to the top of the mountain, and waited. As it started getting worse, they called the race and told us to go to the hotels and wait.

Problem was, all of our skies were at the top of the damn mountain. I have NEVER been in whiteout conditions before this, and this was literally down to about 2 feet of visibility... On the 6-pac chair, you could not see the guy sitting next to you. Could not see the cable for the chair. MOST eerily, I could not see my skies and could only see my legs if I bent over.

I think it took us (me and a good friend) a total of 3 hours to get down the hill trying to follow the safety fences and yelling back and forth for location.
Imagine skiing down a hill with an extra pair of skies on your shoulder, barely being able to see the rope you are holding in your hand, yelling as loud as you can so you dont get separated, and all the while, you cant see your skies on your feet, let alone the variation in the snow. A bunch of guys got lost and held tight until the storm passed later that day. One person, not associated with us, died iirc.

It was the only time I have been scared while skiing.

Also, the '89 earthquake was kind of strange. A shopping cart rolled up a hill where I was living at the time. Also the freeway fell down

And the recent earthquakes in Reno/Verdi were a real PITA. The EARTH was SHAKING every few hours for months. A 4.0 is very small, but when they come about 4 times a day, it can get nuts quick. (I live in west Reno about 2 miles from where they all were centered).

Also, aint no storm like the Oakland Hills Fire Storm. That was only a couple days, but it was an insane couple of days. Nothing like watching a black "cloud" move over the city and across the bay, and listen to madden talk about it from a 49ers game (iirc). Happened right after Washington beat Cal in 91...horrible weekend all around.
