I love me some TCM. As a young kid, it was one of my gateways into "old" films.

On Thursday at 1:00 pm central time is Back to Bataan. I’m excited because I’ve never seen this movie at all.

Also on Thursday at 3:00 pm central is Flying Leathernecks...which I’ve also never seen but I believe is available on Blu.

Then this Friday at 7:15 AM central is The Sea Chase... this is also on Blu right now but I haven’t seen this one either, so I’m looking forward to it.

TCM is such a great Channel for classic Wayne movies and movies in general. Here’s hoping it never goes away!
Those are all great movies...and AFAIK only sea chase is on Blu.

I bought these two in HD from iTunes. Island in the Sky looks decent, but Donovan’s Reed is only acceptable.

The amazonprime version looks better because they use more GB´s than ITunes.

"The Alamo" looks very good on amazonprime but it´s not the Roadshow version but I´ve never seen this movie in that great quality.

Amazingly Prime is showing the restored theatrical cut in 1080 HD but only offering standard def for purchase.

Agreed, I can only imagine how nice this film would look with a full restoration done on the image

B&W 87 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Gold and Greed in an Alaskan Boomtown! Screen legends John Wayne (Reap the Wild Wind), Marlene Dietrich (Witness for the Prosecution) and Randolph Scott (Western Union) shine in this action-packed adventure set against the backdrop of the turn-of-the-century Nome Gold Rush. When honest prospector Roy Glennister (Wayne) gets swindled out of his mine claim, he turns to seductive saloon singer Cherry Malotte (Dietrich) for assistance in his battle with no-good town kingpin Alexander McNamara (Scott). It’s an adventure as wild as the Northwest Territory itself, featuring an all-out fight to the finish between western icons Wayne and Scott that’s considered one of the most spectacular action sequences ever filmed. Directed by Ray Enright (Return of the Bad Men) and based on a book by Rex Beach (The World in His Arms). Beautifully shot by the great Milton R. Krasner (All About Eve).

B&W 92 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Men of Steel! Women of Fire! The dream team of John Wayne (The Searchers), Marlene Dietrich (The Blue Angel) and Randolph Scott (The Spoilers) co-star in this rags-to-riches tale of friendship, love and power. Beautiful Josie Winters (Dietrich) inspires coal-mining buddies Pittsburgh Markham (Wayne) and Cash Evans (Scott) to better their lots in life. Competing for Josie’s affection, the men rapidly climb to the top of their profession. After greed tears the two friends apart, it takes a world war to reunite them, as they refuse to let their patriotism be overshadowed by an age-old rift. The stellar cast includes legendary Stooge Shemp Howard (Soup to Nuts), Thomas Gomez (Ride the Pink Horse) and western icon Paul Fix (Red River). Directed by Lewis Seiler (Guadalcanal Diary).

Color 123 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
From Cecil B. DeMille, the legendary director of The Sign of the Cross, Cleopatra, Samson and Delilah and The Ten Commandments comes this turbulent, swashbuckling tale with an all-star cast, set in 1840s Key West. Reap the Wild Wind stars Ray Milland (The Lost Weekend), John Wayne (Rio Bravo), Paulette Goddard (The Ghost Breakers), Robert Preston (Junior Bonner), Susan Hayward (Rawhide), Raymond Massey (Abe Lincoln in Illinois) and Charles Bickford (The Big Country). A potent combination of romance and adventure, the film centers on a headstrong independent woman played by Goddard. Along the seaboard of the American South, cut-throat salvagers who profit from the wrecks of transatlantic cargo ships move from exploiting shipwrecks to causing them. As the most dangerous of the salvagers, King Cutler (Massey), takes aim at the ships of the wealthy Devereaux Company, ambitious ship captain Jack Stuart (Wayne) and company lawyer Stephen Tolliver (Milland) vie for the hand of feisty Loxi Claiborne (Goddard). Winner of the Academy Award for Best Effects, Special Effects and nominated for two other Oscars, Best Cinematography (Color) and Best Art Direction - Interior Decoration (Color).

Isn't Reap the Wild Wind one of the few movies where Wayne plays a darker, somewhat unsavory character? Or is that the similar Wake of the Red Witch?

It looks like an older HD master with DNR applied. It's acceptable and "better than DVD", but nothing that couldn't be cured with a new scan.

Actually both. He's not really a heavy per say in either film, just not his normal clean cut hero type, that he portrays in most his films. Both are excellent films in my opinion

This is late notice... but I just saw that on TCM today at 5:00-7:00 central time, the movie called The Wings of Eagles is going to be on.

With Wayne and Maureen O'Hara from 1957... and it's not on Blu-ray.

Looking forward to seeing this one for the first time. Can't go wrong teaming Wayne and O'Hara!

I'd say he plays a weak character, tricked into doing bad things, but redeems himself in the end. It doesn't quite work for Wayne, the Duke has to be the hero & be rock solid. Reap The Wild Wind is a smashing DeMille film, full of action, & the Blu-ray looks superb, with solid forties colours that will frazzle your eyes (I have the French Blu-ray). The leading man & star is Ray Milland, & he's great in this.

The Wings Of Eagles is an interesting film. On one side, the story is not particularly strong. But on the other hand, John Wayne turns in one of the best acting performances of his long career. John Ford actually convinced John Wayne to act the final third act without his hair piece on.

And of course, who could ever forget the song "I'm gonna move that toe"

I'm definitely excited for all three of the upcoming John Wayne releases on Blu Ray from Kino. $30 each is a little steep for me though, especially since I was looking to also pick up The Man in the White Suit on the same day. Maybe they'll go on sale between now and then? I'll definitely pick them all up at some point though, and it's nice to see more of Wayne's films coming to Blu.

I'm not sure if they will be included in the upcoming Kino sale. If not, I will just wait until the next one. They will come down.....

Great to hear about these Kino releases in September. It seems like it’s been awhile since a new Wayne movie has come out on Blu.

Just curious: What major ( or even very good) Wayne movies are still not available in Region 1/A?

For me, The Sons of Katie Elder and definitely, The Shootist.

Wondering what else is missing.
