Oh, yeah it is an absurd comparison. My comment was suppose to be more tongue-in-cheek. Speaking of “The Elephant Man”; I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago (unknowingly on the day Freddie Jones passed) and the stage sequence at the end was so wonderfully, as you put it, dreamily surreal, that I kind of wished that there was more footage of it.

Absolutely, John Cassavetes is a pioneer and perhaps the greatest influencer of a certain genre/style of independent film, but when we are speaking of the advent of a modern independent film industry, Sayles was actively at the forefront, first working for Roger Corman, and then on his own, with a diverse set of successful titles tackling many of the social themes that are only now finding a much larger audience in mainstream films and TV.

The Return of The Secaucus 7, Lianna, The Brother From Another Planet, Matewan, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, The Secret of Roan Irish, City of Hope, Lone Star were not only critically acclaimed independent films, but were part of a larger movement.

I love Garbo, and more of her films really need to be on blu-ray, but your statement is inaccurate.

Off the top of my head, John Cazale is one glaring exception. Here's his filmography, with iMDB ratings:

I don’t understand. Criterion puts out the best version of Armageddon on dvd. I’ve waited for a long ting for them to release it on blu Ray. What’s the hold up? Probley the biggest box office release they as a company has put out on dvd. Yes it’s a popcorn flick but that movie was good cheese. I want to see a good the rock transfer with tons of special features of that fun Armageddon cheese.

I hope ths original version of The Man From London gets released. The original audio track. Some clips surfaced on Youtube a while ago and they are far better than the released film with the crap French dub.

Armageddon and The Rock both have Blu-rays. The rock has most of the criterion extras included

Neither of the Criterion DVDs are technically out of print I believe

They're saying both have blu-rays from somebody other than Criterion with the releases carrying over all of the Criterion extras.

I don't know anything about Arbelos having the other titles, but it has been confirmed that all of Bela Tarr's films will be restored over the next 2 years.

Sadly, it's sounding like the JvS set is the same masters as the DVD, so probably not much improvement there, but I'm also happy they'll be available again, though. I've heard great things about all of them.

Eureka released The Last Command on blu and it’s a substantial upgrade over Criterion’s DVD. Even using the same masters, these should look pretty good!

And yes, definitely check them out, The Docks Of New York is a masterpiece by itself.

Cronenberg's Crash just got a restoration and it's being released in Germany as a 4k disc. Makes me wonder who has it in the US! *wink wink
