You have all of the other movies on Blu-Ray fully remastered in HD?

Congratulations. You do know you can only watch those on the Criterion Channel for as long as Criterion has the license, right? Guess what? When I buy the set, I can watch the movies any time I want, even 50 years from now, if I so choose without having to be at the mercy of a licensing deal.

I shared my love of Godzilla with my son by watching the debut film at home, sharing my experience of first seeing these films as a boy back in 60s/70s, by taking him to see G14, and then GKOTM.

In regard to the last entry, he shared the film sucked. I agree.

So, he's no longer interested in Godzilla. And I don't blame him.

And that's OK. We have a slew of other franchises/films that we both really enjoy watching together.

Why do I need this set now? He's not interested in the films, and if he's not going to watch them with me, I'm really not all the interested in watching all of them by myself unless there's something really special or new.

So, I don't need to spend $150, or even $75 for that matter, for a box set collecting dust on a shelf when I've already paid $90 to stream them, along with some really great stuff that I've yet to see, for entire year. I can watch one or two if the mood strikes me, or not. Sets such as Bergman, well, those are films that I can share with my wife and family, so I don't mind paying for the physical media.

I believe Criterion/Toho could have launched this set at a much more optimal time, as an exclusive, with better outcomes, for the set and the franchise in the US.

If Criterion pulls something really special out of the hat, well, as I originally shared, then I'll reconsider.

But thanks all the same for the trouble of your reply, and enjoy the set.
The bigger problem is your son has crap taste in movies. Can't fix that in 2014 or now.

Mind you I just had a blast watching the original Mothra for the first time a few nights ago with no company outside of a lovely cabernet. Screening a fun movie with the wrong person can actually ruin the experience.

Speaking of the set selling out, here's a question for you guys. This'll be my first Big Ticket Item from Criterion, the first 26 disc box like the Bergman set or the Olympics. Is there any first edition swag like what Arrow does (booklet, slipcover, etc) that I might be missing out on if I wait until the first 50% off sale?

I love Godzilla, I'll be buying Godzilla, but I just dropped a ton of cash on new windows for my mom's house so anywhere I can pinch a penny or two is smart.

No, Criterion doesn't drop stuff like booklets as Arrow and others do. What you get day 1 is what you get day 1,000. Just about the only thing that's changed is the switch of some dual format releases to BD only.

They have dropped some source novels & other reprinted material, on some DVD releases (Vampyr, Burden of Dreams) and Blu-ray upgrades (Two-Lane Blacktop lost its screenplay when it was released on Blu-ray and the DVD eventually dropped it as well.) These books in the DVDs were dropped long after the titles had been released and sales could no longer justify the expense of printing a new run of the full release.

The move from dual format to Blu-ray only cost Picnic at Hanging Rock its novel, but the Blu-ray only Red River still has its novel.

Oh, they did do a lenticular slipcover for [i]Time Bandits[/b] that was eventually dropped.

But, whatever form this is released in, you should be able to pick it up anytime, assuming it is still in-print (and it'll be in-print as long as Criterion has the rights.)

Okay, sounds like the six-ish months between release and the next sale should be safe enough.

Take this with as much salt as you like, but someone in the r/Criterion Discord server is saying they can see it in their job's ordering system and it's still slated for October. If I'm remembering right, B&N's sales are in July and November, so you'd actually be able to nab it for 50% off the month after release. That's unless they don't discount recent releases by as much, but I haven't heard of that being the case.

i think it's been the case that new releases that have appeared within the sale window are discounted ... people seem to know they're matching up and wait?

Yep. The Bergman set came out last year right as Criterion began their November sale. The 50% discount was huge factor in its selling out almost immediately.

It’s easy to speculate/hope that this (theoretical) set will be timed in a similar fashion. $75 for what we’re potentially getting here would be a massive bargain.

As a matter of fact I do, and all I can tell you simply whatever obstacles were in place preventing the licensing before Toho made the deal with Legendary/WB, should have been given priority and resolved.

You're still not acknowledging the fact that Legendary, and to a lesser extent, WB, have completely dropped the ball with the Godzilla franchise in the US.

It's over.

GKOTM lost over 50% of their US audience from G14, and the audience that remained skews male and older, aging out with no hope of recovery.

I guess it's fair to say you have no idea how the movie business works, do you?

Actually, the bigger problem is that Legendary have not only lost my son as a potential fan of the franchise, they've lost their way with the Godzilla franchise in the US.

Shame.

As for my son and I, we'll be catching Tarantino's latest in 35MM later this week, which he'll be sharing his review later with the members of the film club at his high school.

As club President, no less.

None of that stops me from enjoying Godzilla movies made 50-60 years ago.
