Looks like we're getting the announcement tomorrow, per Jonathan Keogh.

Oh thank Godzilla. Then we can start hating on each other over facts instead of just speculation.

Or smash up Tokyo when we find out it's actually the Fellini boxed set.

I hope not, but if it isn't a Godzilla set, at least I have Ultraman to look forward to.

Please. VHS is awesome! And I do mean that.

Take it from someone who still records their shows on that format.

Fingers crossed, although tomorrow isn't "early next week". Better late than never though

Or we can just be excited about the set and only be a little disappointed at what the set doesn't have as opposed to harping on every deficiency

Criterion only ever said the announcement would be “next week.” Who said anything about “early next week?”

I'm not bashing anyone, I was just expressing surprise at the fact that a company is releasing a movie on VHS in 2019. I didn't know that was a thing at all. I've heard of VHS-style packaging for more recent formats, but not VHS itself.

I don't begrudge anyone for thinking old formats are retro cool. I understand the appeal of vinyl for example, but personally I much prefer CD (which is itself an old format at this point) when I want physical copies of albums.

You should go Instagram sometime and check out all the girls taking half naked pictures holding horror vhs tapes. It's hilarious.

Man I have been waiting and so excited for this ever since it becane a reality back in 2017. But man for the price and what's include this set is highly disappointing.

Artwork aside the thing that kills me about the case is that the discs are gonna be a pain to get scratch free due to them being placed in sleeves in a book page. Which is also gonna make this very fragile and honestly and just gonna buy empty bluray cases. Pretty sad since I'm tired of collections of films or shows using cruddy digibook cases or stacking discs on top of each other.

The second being that these films are going to obviously be the same masters as the toho blurays which have used he masters that are well over ten years old and not the best for film with how scrubbed of grain and not the best for detail that they are. But more importantly that criterion is charging so much for 8 discs for 15 films. And two discs will have three films sharing one disc. Possibly three if the Japanese version of kong is on the disc with the American cut and godizll a raids again. No matter how good you are at authoring the discs and compression there is no way three films on one disc are gonna look anywhere as good as they would on their own disc or even two on a disc. There is no way that three full films are gonna look any good.

And third the fact that they have had the rights to a bunch of these for at least a year or two and this is all they have to show for it? No American cut restorations, a majority of the film's being subtitles only even if they have international dubs that sync to the Japanese cut. They're had the rights to these for a few years. And this is all we get? Incomplete versions of these films compared to releases from just a few years ago? And definitely gonna be worse prints as they won't be using the kraken prints from the Sony remasters.

I'm of course buying this because I am a physical copy collector but criterion really botched this release in my opinion. It really shows that criterion doesn't really care much for the other films in the franchise. And to me it just screams they cared more about getting all these films for their streaming service and the bluray release is just a bonus. As there is nothing really new and they did no real remastering work on these films. And so far not even any commentaries. Not to mention what is the pointing commissioning artwork for every film when the temporary stuff on starz with the criterion logo was way better. And they aren't even gonna be individual releases.

And it's really sad that as far as October and just upcoming kaiju releases in general. It's really sad that the one I'm now looking forward to the most is the upcoming Millcreek ultraman series sets. As they seem to be handled with more care and are at least trying to get the dubs and even if they don't they won't be so compressed
