Other than that, I find very little to complain about with Indy 4. I've always liked it despite having some gripes with it, but even those have pretty much evaporated.
Which is funny because wasn't it Spielberg or Lucas who raved about it looking as if the sequel was filmed shortly after Last Crusade and how no one would have known it released nearly 30 years after the third?

I do love the cinematography in the beginning though. Really captured that look of actual films from the 1950's.

But then that was last halfway through with all that CGI use.

Quote:
“I was trying to match the visual aesthetic of Douglas Slocombe and sometimes I succeeded, and sometimes I didn’t,” Kaminski says. “The technologies and film emulsions are a little bit different now — they don’t make them like they used to. But I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, because this trilogy is a part of film history.”

They did. Which still required coordinating travel to a store that sold them (again, I don't know how old the OP is and how convenient travel was for him and his friend at the time), and being able to find an article that specifically mentioned the timeline of ToD. Did every article in every fan magazine at the time make mention of this? I'm asking because I honestly don't remember.

I think the real problem with Indy 4 was that it was awful.

Funny, I agree with Spielberg -- I think the look is pretty seamless between Last Crusade and Crystal Skull. The dodgy CGI in some scenes is a whole other issue, but...

Barring the "swinging with monkeys" stuff, I have no real issues with KOTCS. Even Shia Labeouf, who I normally can't stand, managed to do okay. It's definitely the least of the series, but a fun movie nonetheless.

Also, NO ONE is ever going to be Indiana Jones except Harrison Ford. Period. They may eventually start a new series with someone else playing a character with that name but he will never be anything more than an imposter. Which I'm fine with because I won't see those movies and the real series will still exist, so no loss to me. Kind of like the last Ghostbusters movie -- I could not have cared less because its terrible-ness didn't affect the originals one whit and, frankly, made them look even better in retrospect.

Well, it better be pretty soon -- Ford ain't gettin' any younger and he's as likely as not to die in another plane crash before this thing happens!

I'm in for whatever, but I gotta be honest and say that I'm not sure how excited I can get for an Indiana Jones that takes place in the '60s or '70s. This kind of Doc Savage/H. Rider Haggard-style pulp really only seems to work for me when it's WWII era or earlier. I guess I just like my Indiana Jones politically and culturally innocent/naive in a way that I can't imagine being possible after the tumult of the 1960s.

They should put Indy 5 in the 1960's and give him a tie dye shirt and bell bottoms. The plot could be him trying to find out who mixed the brown acid during Woodstock.

It can work if they send him into a little traveled area of which there were still some in the 1960's. If it takes place during the tumult of the late 60's, that could be the rationale for Indy to leave the U.S. - he's fed up with the chaos and dissent and feels more comfortable in the field searching for some object.

Some parts of Africa, the rain forest in Brazil, some parts of India, Vietnam before we started sending troops, Afghanistan, remote parts of China, etc. but regardless of where it takes place, the story needs to be interesting and to make sense and not have any aliens.

I always wanted him to wind up in Africa perhaps looking for the jewels of Opar and wind up meeting John Clayton and they work to solve some problem together. But that won't happen.

The 1960's were the height of the Cold War. There were very few places in the world not involved. Indy could not run away from the conflicts, and the Cold War would fit into just about any plot. It would be interesting if somehow Indy became peripherally involved with Project MKUltra and its Soviet competitor.

The only scene in KOTCS that actually feels like an Indiana Jones film

They could've made a great cold war-era spy thriller.

But instead... ALIENS. Just. ALIENS.

I still don't know why aliens were harder to buy for people than guys ripping out hearts out of chests, immortal cup bearers, or warrior spirits of God face melting Nazis.

Don't get me wrong, KOTCS is poorly made hot trash, but it's not like aliens from other worlds weren't theorized to have contributed to South American ancient cultures. They didn't just pluck it out of thin air.

Agreed. The argument is possibly the wrong one. Especially since Spielberg made some of the most cherished movies about aliens ever. Put another way, if indy iv were going head to head with et or ce3k, it wouldn't stand a chance in the "good movies with aliens" stakes. Although indy iv isn't terrible, it's a helluva bar set by the previous 3.

This. What is it about the sci-fi aspect that pisses people off so much? Why are aliens off-limits for Indiana Jones?
