Or I could get them from the butcher, season overnight, put them on the kettle grill using lump charcoal after waiting for the fire to get to where it needs to be, and enjoy some amazing tasting chops. One method is certainly more work than the other, but the experience is always worth it to me.

All this for a meal that takes about 15 minutes to eat, compared to a few minutes of setup within my system to enjoy a 2 hr movie.

Just a different approach to the same end goal of enjoying a movie or show.
You just HAD to post this particular analogy close to dinner time in my time zone, didn't you? I was just planning to nuke some frozen thing and you go and write this far more appetizing description!

My simple pressing of four to five buttons on the remotes that came with my gear is all I need to do almost every time that I watch anything. My display and avr remember all of my preferred settings. Turn the stuff on and press play; it doesn't need to be any harder than that.

I admire the many talents of the technically gifted, but for all of their vast knowledge, they tend to convolute everything forgetting that most of their end users just want to enjoy this stuff without the need for an A/V engineering background.
Cup of Joe? Twin Peaks rubbing off on you?

I agree. I sometimes need to change things around a little, but with the exception of the odd disc that seems to have lip sync issues (Goodfellas) I’m good to go. I have a separate device that allows me to correct any lip sync but I very rarely have to use it. Even then, it has a remote, so after a little adjusting, it’s good. This has happened just a handful of times in the last ten years. Not a big deal at all.

It should be noted that a good amp should have the ability to correct this anyway but I bought the device for my living room tv and found it did a stellar job.

I thought you might notice that. I hate to think what he would have to go through to bake a whole cherry pie!

I certainly feel that it is worth the time and effort to get the settings on one's display and avr set to where one likes 'em, but once all that is finally done I want to be able to get my movie night under way quickly and easily each time thereafter.

Yep, agreed. I rarely even pause a film once I start. Don’t forget to ramp up those speakers for the final five minutes of each episode in the third series of TP. You won’t regret it!

Yeah, I still need to start that, but I have so very many toys to play with here. I get as easily sidetracked as a cat chasing a laser pointer.

I too like this analogy because I enjoy preparing a good meal, but 15 minutes to eat. No I like to enjoy the meal and savor every bite. So for me it's like 45 minutes to an hour. I like to take my time!

I forgot the Velleman devices referenced are in kit form so they must be assembled from components which requires soldering. You can download the assembly manual from the links provided to see if it is something you would want to do.

Search for "IR controlled relays" and you may find something in ready to use form.

nice analogy the only thing I would add is that with the right control solution it is like having a personal chef cook it for you.

It’s that simple for me most of the time but sometimes audio has been mastered too low or not quite right. A few adjustments are sometimes necessary. It’s well worth it. All these years later, it still takes me by surprise. I was watching Ghost Stories (highly recommended) the other night and the surrounds had me convinced I had a leak somewhere due to the excellent rear channel effects. Very occasionally the surrounds have me convinced an intruder is in the house!

I get some don't want to turn on the TV (and receiver) and they just press play. explains why they can't see or hear a difference when comparing formats

I get why some will take the TV remote, turn it on, take the receiver remote turn it on and to the right input, take the BD/streamer remote and then turn it on and the press play (or more complex then that)

for me it is watch film (turns everything on and to the right inputs) and then why not a second press to make sure the AR and audio is right. After all I am sure I am not the only one that takes part in this thread that has bought the same film on next generation formats over and over again to have it in the best source possible why should I stop there and not one extra click to also make sure that my set-up is playing it back in the best way possible?

What I hated the most when I watched bluray was the trailers, fbi warning etc that you can't skip. No more trouble with digital.

Except for the FBI warning, which is only on screen for mere seconds, the "forced" trailers can almost always be skipped by just pressing the chapter next button until you reach the menu. Not every disc is authored with such "forced" trailers, either.

Regardless, I would never settle for the lower quality of streaming for my purchased content. I would not become dependent upon unreliable and ever more costly internet service to watch my movies nor would I pretend that digital conveys real ownership just because I had to endure an FBI warning for a few seconds.

When I buy something, I insist upon actually owning it. Only physical media gives me that and it usually gives me the digital code, too.

It’s not, but even if I have to stare 10 minutes of trailers (no trailers on UHD) and less than a minute of FBI warning. I’d rather “suffer” doing that than dealing with craptastic video and audio for the duration of the movie that I have to pay. Heck, I don’t even want to go through craptastic audio and video even when it’s free.
