It tanked because its a slightly boring movie with pacing issues and the High School Musical jaunts don't do well outside very few select movies. La La Land being the last one to really nail it for Oscar bait.

This whole movie was a Bruce Springsteen tribute movie really dressed up as being based on a historically racist era for British Pakistani and similar ethnic minorities. Whilst there was elements of racial drama and tension, it never really focused down on a particular angle imo.

Movies like Selma for example worked because they knuckle down on one thing. This movie just didn't really know what it wanted to focus on and that makes it suffer imo when watching it.

It also has some really cheesy stuff in it.
