709 Red River.

Unsure about it so I tried again and got 420 Agnes Varda's Le bonheur. More my speed.

With that said, for me this was definitely a one and done viewing (however I had to purchase a copy for my collection, just for the comments I've received for my friends).
Well, given that the film was based on a novel by the Marquis de Sade . . .

I'm just amused that someone felt the need to censor the word "up".

It should be noted that Criterion released this movie on DVD. For those who don’t know, Criterion is a DVD company that prides themselves on preserving only the “best” in world cinema. Since Criterion was also responsible for releasing Salo, it seems to me that they are trying to corner the market on all the “arty” movies in which people are shown taking a dump. It makes me confident that if I ever make a movie, all I need to do is show somebody taking a shit and add a few subtitles and it'll get picked up by Criterion.

Reading the plot summary on Wikipedia is hilarious, not just because the film sounds bizarre enough as it is but also because it seems to have been written by someone who is well versed in English on a scholarly level, possibly as a second language, but who would sound odd in an everyday conversation.

I really hate their packaging for Red River. It's a wonderful release of a great movie but somehow they made a GIANT awkward packaging, it's ugly as hell and sticks out on a shelf. Why oh why Criterion can't just stick to their regular packaging is beyond me. I really wish they'd offer replacement for some of these silly packaging. I own all of their Chaplin and Harold Lloyd movies and only The Freshman is in a digipack and it just doesn't mesh at all with all the other ones. At least all the Chaplin movies are similar. Hopefully they don't mess it up with their upcoming release of the Circus!

DVD-only so I tried again and got #7, A Night to Remember.
Just watched the Kino blu Port of Shadows. Such a dark film. Very dark, and I don't mean the lighting. But what wonderful characters. And with everyone running around in the gorgeous fog, the beauty of the movie lightens its pessimism.

I don't remember the DVD version well, but as I've found in a lot of movies, seeing this on blu-ray for the first time is almost like seeing a different film.

With results like this, I think I'll give the RNG a spin. And that would be very appropriate, lol.

A Night to Remember is compelling, but it's no Port of Shadows.

Port of Shadows actually sounds like a good name for a Titanic movie, or documentary

Random number generator between 1 and 1000 gave me #319.

Which turns out to be a cool movie by Kurosawa (that I've yet to see)! Anyone see it? Like it?

It’s one of his best IMHO, been waiting for an upgrade for both that and Red Beard (and Stray Dog but those two take priority for me).

[Show spoiler]
Not as famous or obvious as Throne of Blood or Ran, but it's Kurosawa's another Shakespearean work, loosely based on Hamlet. Though the last part became a bit too melodramatic, overall, it's a fabulous film noir on corporate corruption. And the wedding reception scene at the beginning is probably one of Kurosawa's best moments IMO.

Coppola had to have seen this before he put together the opening wedding scenes (I say scenes since it goes on for a good 45-50 min) in The Godfather. Both are sublime examples of establishing the various characters and providing organic exposition.

No Blu-ray! I saw The Last Wave during its theatrical release in Sydney in the late 70's, I thought it was pretty good at the time. I tried watching it again a couple of years ago, it felt very dated and I couldn't stick with it. Seems to be a title on a lot of wish lists for a BD upgrade.

I've only seen Umbrellas, which was a blind-buy because it was really cheap. Not into musicals, but I loved it - such a powerful and emotional film.
