![]() Any time that a thread appears where someone says that they prefer one thing over the other, a "vs." thread is born. If I started a thread about buying a LED TV, the OLED crowd, and maybe even the projector crowd, would be there in an instant to tell me that I had made the wrong choice and vice versa. As far as I can tell, it's iTunes that gave free 4K upgrades. If you have Movies Anywhere though, you just benefited from the free iTunes 4K upgrade on all linked providers.

I have MA Linked to Vudu, but I'll never have iTunes. Still get the 4K upgrades in Vudu.

Close Encounters and many other Sony movies were not upgraded, you must have already owned those UHD in UV. Vudu added those as "owned" in their system. Most/all only still play in HD until such time as Vudu adds a UHD encode. But already owned, not some generous UHD upgrade gift. To give a rough idea of how it works, 4K is equal to 35mm, 8K is equal to 70mm (Lawrence of Arabia for example). For newly filmed content, the only benefit would to having the format would be content scanned from 70mm film or already filmed in 8K. One current example of that would be season 3 (and 2?) of Stranger Things, where you might actually want an 8K version since filmed in 8K. 4K is nothing without the accompanying HDR or DV color grading. The definition alone is not enough to see a difference, but combined with the color grading, UHD and HDR/DV help the other to achieve a film-like (or more effect 4K) image. |

And yes, this is the one case where redeeming in a service has resulted in 4K upgrades via MA, and thanks to Apple granting 4K/UHD MA rights.

Life's too short. Do what feels right for you. You can make a valid argument for both schools of thought, and be absolutely right for your situation.
I would like to comment on an underlying theme that I sense from both sides of the spectrum, though. Whether you have a digital or physical collection, do yourself a favor and actually WATCH them. Stop lamenting, stop procrastinating...get down to it. Make a plan to reasonably work through your collection. Even stop buying until you start watching. I remember when my father passed away and there was this empty house, full of books and tapes...and, quite frankly, I knew that he only really ever gotten around to maybe enjoying a tenth of what he owned, if even that. You have to ask yourself what are you buying this item for, and is it really serving you for a better purpose than before you were even aware of its existence? |

Do that many people pay $35 for 4k disc? I have around 20 so far and have yet to spend over $13. I guess if you struggle with self control and can’t wait a few months on a sale. I buy around 20 films during the year between Black Fridays then pick up around 10 titles on Black Friday. Most newer 4k releases are between $8-$15 if you can exercise patience. I’m not pressed for money, but I’m frugal. If you don’t mind spending $35 more power to you but it sounds like it is an issue for the OP. Sure digital is cheaper sooner it seems, but if you wait just a little while longer you can own the physical and digital for around the same price and often less.

I went all digital about 5 years ago and never looked back, can watch my content on all of my devices, free 4K upgrades, all stored on the cloud which makes it safer than my physical copy being damaged/lost/stolen. Physical sales haven’t been doing well for several years now, most people are shifting to digital & streaming. You still get people who want physical but all depends on what you want. I will say that some people on this site have a very old man “get off my lawn” approach when it comes to digital, don’t pay them any mind.
As for buying digital vs. streaming...I knew when Netflix came out that everyone else would jump on board and there would eventually be dozens of networks offering subscriptions. I just left cable and didn’t want to get into another monthly bill, also I don’t like shelling out money for content I don’t watch, and I cant afford subscriptions to 5 different services for the content I want so I ended up buying all of my content through itunes. Anything I want I just buy when its a good price. No subscriptions/advertisements, etc. You can price track it and pick it up when its on sale. Last edited by Night*Wolf; 09-08-2019 at 12:29 PM. ![]() We also have a situation where control is about to be handed to the studios, so don’t be surprised to see films you own, censored and cut. It is my opinion, that people who have switched to digital, are not true film fans. I can’t say I’m sorry that Digital HD growth seems to be grinding to a halt. |

For big action packed, sci-fi, or horror movies that are good I try to pick up the 4K but for cartoons and comedy and such I go digital. Also movies have gotten really really bad lately and I am buying less movies anyways. Just rent them first and buy only the good ones, that will save you a ton right there, since they're not many good ones nowadays. Also with blu-ray.com price history and price watch being gone a lot of people buy less I would say.
