Me too. The early shot I especially liked was the dirt on the road shoulder in the highway grab, it's more pinkish brown before it turns to grey (as it moves down the hill), it's more noticeable and punchy vs the more drab, mostly grey "old" shot...that was enough to tell me they did good!

All right, I've officially reached peak nerd - I just remotely accessed my home desktop so I could mux the original mono audio into the 4K so I can watch it as soon as I get home.

Edit: Assuming the sync hasn't changed, of course.

MKVToolNixGUI, my friend. It's extremely easy.

Edit: Just want to clarify that in some/many cases, some sync work is required, and that is quite a bit more tedious. I'll report back on the sync for this particular movie.

Where'd you get the original mono from?

Generally they are sourced from bit-perfect LaserDisc audio rips.

I never owned laser disc (well, I was given a broken laser disc player once). However, I recall when the first DVDs were getting released how many LD owners were complaining how the DVD sounded less full, flat, etc. The whole discussion of compression started coming into light.

These days, laserdiscs are holy grails of preserved lossless versions of original mono or stereo tracks for older movies for those making fan preservations of their favorite films.

For The Killer, for example, I ripped the mono PCM track from my Criterion laserdisc and muxed it with a German DVD. Same with Hard Boiled.

My 007 laserdiscs are the only means to get a CD quality version of the original audio tracks. VHS Hi-Fi is surprisingly good too, but the LD rips tend to sound a little cleaner IMHO most likely because they are less A/D conversions and LDs were the premiere release format in the day so they were often straight from the printmaster. I don't know the sources of your typical Hi-Fi track.

I remember the same thing. I also made the argument with CDs compared to MP3s.

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of grain. Oh, my God. It even has Dolby Vision.

and looked what happened -- more streaming - and believe it or not, the sale of vinyl overtakes the sale of CD's (what's the world coming to ??)
