Hopefully the new 1080p disc isn't full of the usual Warner silliness. Has anyone checked theirs out yet?

It's been said often of many releases this year that they are the best. I'm not about to play that game, I'm just thrilled we are getting so many fantastic releases. How much The Shinings quality is attributed to simply going back to Kubricks colour timing, in my opinion, probably all of it. You finally get that in 4K and your jaw just hits the floor. You wonder was this man really human? Or a god who came for a short visit to our mortal realm and toyed with a camera lense? I still can't understand how such perfection is achieved, but here I am seeing it in front of my very eyes.

Some things as a C8 OLED owner I really enjoyed, were, Shelley Duvalls black hair, Scatman Crothers shirt and suit combination in the Closing Day chapter. Also nice to see his chromedome head really shine (every pun intended) with the added luminosity when he's talking about the Shining. The whole hotel is a visual buffet when viewed on an OLED from wood grains, funky carpets ect. Your eyes will have no trouble finding delectable details to feast upon.

A few minor things in regards to the film it self. I'm convinced Nicolsons acting is at it's peak when done under good strict direction. Unlike The Passenger though, he has the freedom to exercise his trademark improv within the parameters Kubrick has set. Once you've seen the film so many times, you really start to pick up on how synchronized the relationship Nicholson and Kubrick is. Like they were almost telepathicly connected. Giving that almost hypnotic movement Nicolson has with the camera.

The other thing I'd like to give mention to is when I'm viewing The Interview and Closing Day chapters. I pay particular attention to Bill Watson. His stern appearance, first sizing Jack up when introducing himself. On Closing Day seeming terse and anxious. It's a great little contrast with him and Ullman who's being more flippant and trying to laugh everything off.
The longer take with him stalking Shelley up the stairs when she has the Bat. Even Shelley acting is perfect. And so terrifying! Great stuff!

I’m not watching on an oled but a 930E but the detail is so good it gets distracting at times.
Indeed. I'm concentrating so much on them, that this is me if someone walked in and interrupted

Her performance is so misunderstood. Though I do believe her reaction to the axe scene is legit. As Kubrick never told her what was going on.

This film is all about Kubrick’s perfectionism and it shows on the 4K.

The detail is stunning to say the least it’s like watching it for the first time all over again and I’ve seen it at home and theatrically too many times too count. I for one am glad to see it at home in such a beautiful manner.

Funny thing is that I’ve never known anyone offline that was bothered by the performance.

Not yet. But you want silliness, just remember Warner have made a Stephen King film as a sequel to a film based on a Stephen King book. I guess no one knew that distinction, and how this means Dr Sleep was doomed to fail before the cameras started rolling. Waiting for that Stephen King film sequel to Shawshank Redemption next.

I also strive for better as I have bought this on numerous occasions but as we strive for better you’re also missing out on the best release this film has ever had and likely will ever have.

Do I wish it had everything you listed? You bet

Do I regret buying this in its best presentation ever? Not at all.

But people not buying this we are just hurting the format because titles that take this much care won’t be released. You want EYes Wide Shut it depends how well the Shining does.

Neither do Samsung: https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-to...s-report-says/, so if we're dick measuring which discontinued player brand is best then the OPPO destroys the Samsung in every conceivable respect. The Samsung's can't even show menus on certain discs properly because they can't handle still-frame HEVC encodes. Utter shite.

Anyone out there going to attempt to rip the mono audio from the laserdisc release and create their own 4K file with the Original MONO mix? I assume the MONO audio on the LaserDisc was PCM and not compressed like the original DVD release

Still can’t believe that WB ruined their 5.1 mix by actually editing the music score so haphazardly.

That the one I've got, but even a mere soundbar is too loud for my creaky damaged hearing.

Look back about 20 pages, someone was working on it.

Yes, the LD PCM mono track has been synced.

I haven't seen The Shining since my dad made the wise decision to let me watch this on HBO back when I was 5 or 6 years old in the early 80's. I've watched the first 30 minutes of this and have to say that the picture quality is absolutely stunning. This goes right beside Apocalypse Now, Alien, and 2001 as the best looking catalogue titles IMO.

My take on The Shining is that it is not a horror film at it's core. It's a simple story about good vs evil (a metric ton of theological elements are present throughout the film), and how the devil is always trying to recruit new followers (preying on those who have not achieved the "enlightenment").

Having not seen this film in over 30 years (until today), it was great to see it again for the "first time". Definitely a 4K film for the bookshelf.
