The DD 5.1 track was fine, while the Atmos track was out of sync. I didn't change any equipment or equipment settings - I just changed the track that was being played. I don't know what to make of that.

Waiting for this to go down to 14.99 or 15.99 like the other sequels. Come on baby!

Which Blu-ray disc is better for the movie - the remastered Blu-ray disc in the 4K release or the original Blu-ray disc? I know the color timing is different on both discs, but which one is the way the film is truly meant to look? Which Blu-ray disc has better picture quality and which Blu-ray disc would you show someone who wants to watch the movie for the first time?

So glad Matrix 4k went back to the blue/green tint. I remember watching Matrix in the cinema and not even noticing that there was a greenish hue in the Matrix and getting it on Blu-ray and being stunned at how I could have missed it because it was so green. The 4K is how I remember it, subtle. They definitely colour timed the Blu-ray to be more green and when back to the original colour timing for the 4K.

So glad this was a stellar transfer as this is my favorite movie of all time.

You're not wrong exactly, but one point of contention would be the green tint was put on the DVD release after the trilogy was out (not done FOR blu-ray). I believe it was the 2003 re-release DVD. Done to be in line with the theatrical intent and DVD transfers of Reloaded and Revolutions.

So the strong green came in with the DVD rather than the Blu ray?

It came with the second release of the DVD after the sequels were filmed.

I'd show them the new remastered Blu-ray.

Interesting the UK version is $5 usd cheaper on Amazon than the U.S version.

Also, not sure the sequels warrant the price of 4K right now. Maybe if they get a good Black Friday deal.

Laserdisc. The only home video release with original theatrical color timing.

Majority of the new BD has theatrical colors. Some scenes were reworked to look "better than theatrical". Just go with the new BD.

Same here. Not sure about the different audio options but the first movie has an audio delay that drives me mad... Doesn't happen on any other of my movies, so I guess there has to be something wrong on this disc. Maybe some discs are faulty? Since not everyone seems to have this issue.

I found that both tracks on the UHD were delayed. Normally I need to delay audio for UHDs by 60ms for sync, I had to switch off the delay for The Matrix to be watchable (it still doesn't look perfect). I'm using a Panasonic UB820.

WTF are Warner playing at?

Anyone else found The Matrix UHD to be overly dark? I could barely see the black cat, and when Morpheus opens the curtains to find the wall boarded up all I could see was shadow, no boarding.

Also, the removal of the green tint has gone overboard, and they've boosted the saturation so the characters look like they're wearing lipstick. I saw this 3 times in the cinema and it always had a subtle green wash (though less than the blurays which were green-boosted to match the sequels).

Add to this the audio sync issues in my above post and I'm pretty disappointed with this supposedly definitive release.

What TV are you watching on and is it calibrated/what picture mode are you on?

I do get the 'lipstick' complaint with the HDR grade, they have very pinky faces at times, but too dark? Not at all.

Watching on a Kuro with picture squeezed down by a Panasonic UB820 player. I know you’ll roll your eyes but other UHDs look great, no complaints, this is uniquely dark.

I played with TV and player brightness/contrast levels and it didn’t help - the information just wasn’t there.

Can you see the boarded up ‘window’ on your version, or is it all shadow as on mine? Is the black cat clearly visible on yours, or do you strain to see it against the burgundy floor? Thanks.

Ah. Yeah. Sorry if this comes off as A-class douchebaggery but once you start converting stuff to SDR then you've no idea how each movie is going to react to it, it's no good just waving it off with "but other movies look good" because it doesn't work like that. Hell, it doesn't always work like with actual HDR viewing, never mind SDR conversion!!

On the UHD, viewed in HDR on the ZD9, I can clearly see the black cat visible against the carpet and this is with the curtains open and light beaming in, never mind my usual dark room viewing conditions. Literally just took this photo, there's no messing around with exposure as that's what it looks like in motion to me:
[Show spoiler]

As for Morpheus and the wall, I can *just* see the brickwork when he opens the curtains (it's not boarded up but bricked in) but, to have a reference measure, I watched the same scene on the original Blu-ray and the shadow detail is virtually identical, just a hint of brickwork briefly visible. I also checked the new Blu-ray and it's got a lil' bit more shadow detail but it just isn't a blazingly bright scene and your SDR conversion is knackering it further.
