Our copy was wore out and falling apart by the time Son Of Golden Turkey Awards came out. Once I discovered eBay, one of the first things I bid on (and won) was a new copy of The Golden Turkey Awards. I also got the other movie books by the Medveds. Since 1980 I have been trying to see all the winners (and losers) in this book so far I've seen all but two of the winners: Wild 90 & the lost film Him. The lost film Him (1974) is linked to a lengthy online article about the history of the hunt for it. Last edited by Spootnek; 06-18-2025 at 04:22 AM. |

FYI, you posted the wrong cover image for Tarzan and the Great River.
Otherwise, great thread idea. I remember reading the Fifty Worst Films Of All Time years ago and enjoyed it, though I didn't agree with all the selections. Has someone already created a thread for the films in that book? |

Apparently, Johnny Carson used Sonny Tufts name a lot as a punchline when talking about bad acting. And this book came out in 1980 when he was still on.

The poll was from 1978 and it was the general public voting so that's why most of the films were from the 5 most recent years. Only 4 films in the top 17 were from before 1973.

The book was written in the late 70s and seeing as it was the days before even home videotape rentals, most of the people voting likely wouldn't have seen a lot of older bad movies unless they caught one of them on late night TV or something, so they picked recent films they didn't like such as Grease(!)

The sequel book, SON OF GOLDEN TURKEY AWARDS, was much better IMO, because by then many of the films they were writing about had surfaced on VHS. Admittedly, some of the writing for their first two books was done from distant memories.

The funny thing about The Golden Turkey Awards book is that it names Ed Wood as worst Director and Plan 9 as Worst Film.
There is not a single mention of Ed Wood or Plan 9 in the Medved's 1978 book The 50 Worse Films of All Time - which lists The Omen, Sergei Eisenstein's Ivan The Terrible and Alain Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad among the worst! It was the reader's poll which lead to the Medved's acting in 1980 like they'd always known about him, listing him as Worst Director, with Plan 9 getting Worst Film, with Exorcist II as the runner-up. |

![]() Not the first time that Carson has gotten credit (?) for a recurring joke that originated on LAUGH-IN. Carson is often mis-credited for the phrase "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" because his show originated from there. But it was actually LAUGH-IN which pioneered that phrase as their show also hailed from Burbank. Carson frequently ridiculed Burbank, no doubt, but he never actually said "Beautiful Downtown Burbank." Back on topic, SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM is the WORST Blaxploitation film? Wow, who knew? I guess I've just been fooling myself all these years for actually enjoying it. Well, if it's in a book, it must be true! |

I almost saw PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE--back in 1960!
It was actually playing at a downtown Seattle first-run theater, as the co-feature with the Russian fantasy film THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON. My mother took me to see DRAGON, since I had a Dell movie comic book rendition of it. We watched DRAGON, but then my mother wanted to leave, so we did. Nearly 60 years later now, I wish we had stayed and watched PLAN 9 as well! |

In short: **** Medved and **** the Golden Turkey. The stink of Plan 9 being the worst film ever made still lingers to this day and I can think of a dozen movies that are way worse right off the top of my head.
And Scream, Blacula, Scream is the Worst Blaxploitation Movie Ever Made? The man is a fool. |
