I have met Rode and agree with you. He's a very nice guy and fun to talk to.

Man, I hope that it does. D.O.A. is one of my holy grail titles. Even a decent DVD release would be welcome.

D.O.A. is in the public domain, but apparently Wade Williams owns the only decent materials for it. At least, that’s what the Kino insider told me.

Ahh D.O.A. A movie with one of the most intriguing and promising premises in movie history almost totally undone by masses of exposition, an almost unwatchable romantic subplot (ohhh Paula I DO love you!), and a hero who REFUSES to tell anyone what is happening to him, even when it might help wrangle some explanations out of them.

A few good performances and sequences, but overall the reputation is way bigger than the reality.

But hey, I decent copy at a decent price would still be welcome in my collection.

Are you sure it's good enough for your collection?

He's also a brilliant commentator. I make a point of owning every blu-ray on which he
does the commentary, since they're usually my favorite films. I hope Warner Brothers
will offer him the commentary on the new Mystery of the Wax Museum 4k restoration.
No one is better qualified to discuss that film than Rode, who wrote the Curtiz biography.

It seems like a lot of classic noir films (see Detour) are skipping commentaries and I wish they would go back to people like Rode. It makes me want to buy them.

It seems that Criterion doesn't usually do commentaries on anything.

Fortunately, MATEWAN will have an audio commentary with John Sayles and Haskell Wexler.

Caps are up for the re-release of The Hitch-Hiker. It appears that Kino managed to do the seemingly impossible by re-releasing a film with an inferior transfer to their own initial release.

Honestly, if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the remaster because the old disc looks pretty sharpened to me in comparison.

I looked at the comparison myself and I see what you mean but I actually prefered the 2013 screen shots. It looked sharper and not as blurred. I do like the commentary and the subtitles however on the new transfer.

The older release is clearly artificially sharpened/edge enhanced.

Having said that, the new one does look to be a little too grain managed.

Something is definitely a bit off about the new one. Could be just bad encoding, but I don't imagine the original restoration made it look like this.

As the member above said, the commentary track, and subs are certainly pluses for this new release, even if it could probably look better.

I finally got around to watching "Kiss Me Deadly" tonight, I've been putting off for far too long on my Criterion purchases (the recent flash sale remedied that), what a damn fine film. Mike Hammer puts the "hard" in hard-boiled. That climax was pretty off the wall.

I love that film so much. I've probably watched it four or five times, and it never gets old. It has that pulpy, pull-no-punches quality that characterizes many of the best noirs.

Yea, it's my favorite noir and I only just discovered it a couple of years ago myself. Meeker is stunning as Mike Hammer. Plows his way through the movie like a bull in a china shop. And that third act...how many directors cribbed from that? Spielberg. Lynch. Tarantino. Cox. Fincher...

And such a marked difference in its private eye protagonist who is as far as you can get from Raymond Chandler's description that these men must be the guardian knights of the mean streets. In this movie Hammer is an egotistical, selfish, stupid bastard who is so self-centered his actions help bring about a
[Show spoiler]mini-armageddon.
It's likely the darkest of all the noir films, brilliant and unrelenting. Everyone needs this movie in their collection.

It has the hardest for me to watch torture sequence.
