Full 4K screen captures from DVD Beaver :
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/wizard.htm Well, not like a modern 35mm film emulsion scanned in 8K and converted to 4k file, but for a emulsion of a 1939 film, it's incredible. Imax did the new restortion work, using a technology similar to the one created by John Lowry (from Lowry Digital Images), since it analyze the grain pattern, check the grain position in one frame and in a sequence of very similar frames or similar things on nect and earlier frames, and since grain it's randow, they have a different spaces points and the analyze of it can lead to extract more details than one frame alone would present. This also helps reduce grain without kill details and helps to sharpen images without look artificial. For original camera negative, such technology can make a film have more details than ever had. The Kansas sequence, in sepia, did not survived in original camera negatives, since it burned in a film vault fire (while the technicolor negatives survived as was stored in other film vault) but there was fine grain masters shot in the 50's or 60's for the Kansas sequences. Fine grain have a much better quality for keep original image details if compared to film prints. For other side there is still some kind of loss of details, despite be a little loss. The Imax detail enhancement technology probably helped to recover the details in some degree but it would had recover even more if that sequence had survived as camera negatives. Quote:

I ordered for pickup at one Target and got an email that it was sold out (before opening), so I switched to another Target, which had it -- and I saw no others in the store. They clearly didn't stock up even though it was in the ad. I got it for $15.46 with the B2G1 promotions.
It's a good day for classics because It's a Wonderful Life just showed up on my doorstep! |

Had to go to 3 Sunrise Records here in Canada to finally find a copy. The second one I went to told me that only their bigger stores were getting it, so I wonder if this is one of those releases that will be limited for while.
