I think the Irishman has a high chance of getting a release. It will probably be at least 12 months before we see it, but I think it has a good chance of happening now.

The realist in me would've said it's likely due to a clause in Cuaron's contract with Netflix, but this tweet has me

Great news and a further reflection of the demand for physical media. The rumors of home media’s demise are entirely false.

A promising sign of things to come. A big kudos to Criterion for making this happen.

And "Marriage Story".

That cover is stunning.

Okja, Meyerwitz Stories, Irishman, Other Side of The Wind, Buster Scruggs, Beasts of No Nation and Marriage Story all movies I would want to get the Criterion treatment!

Maybe pair Okja with a release of Memories of Murder!

I hate to be the voice of gloom regarding other Netflix titles, but I suspect this is a special case. Participant financed this film, Netflix just distributed it:

https://www.screendaily.com/particip...133075.article

I suspect we're seeing this disc on the date we are because Netflix had a 12 month exclusive window.

Not all Netflix exclusive movies are actually owned by Netflix. Cloverfield Paradox, for example, was a Paramount film that Netflix distributed, thus we got a BD of it too.

The Irishman was fully financed by Netflix, they own it forever, as far as I know. I believe most of the other titles mentioned above are also fully owned by Netflix. Obviously this isn't an outcome I'm happy with, I'm always in favor of physical media releases and I'd love to be proven wrong...

Take that elsewhere. This is the Criterion blu-ray's big moment darnit!
I'm VERY happy to see it getting a physical release but given that people have been dropping loads of hints that this would be Criterion's first UHD title then it's still a major disappointment to me that it's apparently not. When the likes of Vinegar Syndrome can do it with a piece of unrepentant schlock like Tammy and the T-Rex then Criterion literally have no more excuses when they're dealing with such a high-profile multi-Oscar-winning flick like this which already has a painstakingly graded 4K Dolby Vision master ready to go, it's not like Criterion have to lift a finger to remaster it.

It's not where the subs are from that he's referencing (I think!), it's that most movies that Criterion release will have had subs available for several languages (being on Netflix or not) but they don't feature them on their discs as they're only creating a specific English-language version for release in North America, and the USA at that. Interesting that it's got French subs in that case though I'm not a Criterion junkie so has this been a recent trend with them, that they've started to include more alternate language options? If not then it's a curious development.

Yeah, I see this as more of a special scenario given the production company and I'm sure Cuaron's input on how to release it.

With that though, I could easily see The Other Side of the Wind getting the Criterion treatment with how many Welles films they've already released!

That film had a financing/production saga worthy of its own book, lasting decades. Netflix stepped in at the end to finance the completion, but I haven't read anything that makes it entirely clear who owns the finished film.

Hopefully. What's even better is that you don't have to double-dip for it since it will be ever present on Netflix.

My hope is that with Scorsese being Netflix's (arguably) biggest get, director-wise, he will have used that to leverage a physical release as part of his contract.

Well, he couldn’t get them to do a wide theatrical release, so who knows...

They were willing, major theater chains just demanded a longer exclusive window.

I'd like to believe this, but my problem is that Scorsese cares more about theatrical release than home video release, and that Netflix cares more about the (lack of) home video release than the (lack of) theatrical release, and it's obviously true that Scorsese wasn't able to use his leverage to change Netflix's position on theatrical release. My hope is that some foreign distributor puts it out somewhere (I'm not sure of the financing of the film, so I don't know how likely that is).

To be fair, the theater chains only demanded the theatrical window that's been standard since 2010, when Disney brokered a deal for Alice in Wonderland - 90 days. Netflix would not agree to that.

I'm surprised at all the Buster Scruggs mentions all of a sudden when there was hardly a peep of the movie when it was initially released. I have heard and read that it is a lesser Coen Bros. movie. I must give it a watch soon...

Netflix fully financed The Irishman, they control it worldwide.
