I just ordered this from Amazon, even though I don’t have a 4K player yet (and probably won’t for a while). I don’t have this on Blu-ray yet, and figured I may as well future proof myself. I assume the standard Blu-ray included with this is the new remastered disc that also came out simultaneously?

It sounds like it has Disc 2 of the previous release that has that bastard stepchild colorized version. |

Maybe Ted Turner got Paramount locked into some stupid home video stipulation every release in the US has to have it. |

I just wish you didn’t have to buy two editions to get the new 1080p disc. The HTF thread is a bit all over the place. I haven’t followed up on that in a little while, but I tried to post in there hoping for some clarification.

I just found pics of the UK edition on the UK eBay, and the back cover does confirm that Disc 2 is the remastered B&W Blu-ray. I might wait a bit on that because it’s a bit pricier, especially with shipping, but at least I know there’s a way for me to get both discs at once. Thankfully Amazon makes it easy to cancel one item in a giant order before it ships.

I ended up buying both versions at Walmart over the last couple of days. At first I got the 4K because of the awesome $5.96 price. Then as I'm walking to my car I remembered that it doesn't include the remastered Blu-ray and went back and got it today.

Personally, I'd rather have the alternate versions than a Blu-ray of the same movie. I wish the Blu-ray in the 4K of Blade Runner was the Workprint version. I've no use for duplicates. I'd also rather have the colorized version of It's a Wonderful Life than the black and white Blu-ray. I'll never watch it, but it was amusing to skim through it.

They could have included both discs like 95% of other 4K UHD releases for those of us that are future proofing. They could’ve also included the colorized version as a third disc if they wanted it there so badly. Nobody was asking for it in the first place, especially not the hardcore cinephiles that are getting this 73 year old black-and-white film on 4K UHD.
Not gonna lie, colorized films can be fun to watch as curiosities, but I can’t picture sitting through an entire film like that (though I remember watching bad colorized versions of Scrooge (1951) and The Most Dangerous Game (1934) in school). As far as the technology has come, it still looks very uncanny-valley. |

Best guess: Paramount still had a tonne of old colorized discs stock and wanted to clear it. The old B&W disc has only been repackaged a couple hundred times, so they have ample opportunity to flog that old stock.
I’m annoyed I had to fork out more cash for the remastered 1080p disc. I also got 13 Hours 4K from the US and now I need to source disc 1 of the Blu for that, FFS. |

I'm not bothered. It's contributing towards archival preservation and restoration. It gets more out the vaults and onto disc. It produces the 35mm prints for the purisist purists to watch in theatres.

THANK YOU!!!!! HA HA HA funny boy. I bought It's a Wonderful Life yesterday. AND no, It's a Wonderful Life was not on 4K for $5.99. I'm not buying that one. You can't fool me. I'm sorry but a studio would be stupid to do that. That would be shooting themselves in their very own foot. And those that buy into would be helping to kill physical media. Way to go. But, that's not true though. Because studios are not that stupid. So, we'll put this Bigfoot and any other stupid myths. And by the way, I will ALWAYS full price on release if it something that I want. On 4K UHD, Blu-ray, CD, or vinyl. Because I support the studios and artists/musicians who bring this wonderful work to us at a cost upfront to them. Last edited by fighthefutureofhd; 11-30-2019 at 11:19 PM. |
