Default Solar Energy changing the way we live...

http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/002550.html

Quote:
Swedish company Parans has found a way to collect sunlight by panels in over 500 lenses, transmit it through fibre-optic cables and illuminate light-deprived interiors. In each room, the sunlight flows out through specially designed luminaires.

Parans’ luminaires give a mixture of parallel light beams and ambient light, just as when the sun strikes through the foliage of a forest. The system allows you to tell the weather even without windows or skylights, re-establishing a connection with the outside environment.

It is nice to see that in some places trying to better harmonize nature/technology is a genuine endeavor.

It would have to be complemented with regular lighting for places that get lots of rain. I don't see it being very viable in homes either, not much sunlight in the middle of the night.

Well even those places, sunlight still pierce through the clouds. You may not get a lot of sunlight but it's still there enough. It can tell you that outside it is raining.

I do agree that it has to complement regular lighting. These devices if implemented in light-deprived interiors could save thousands of millions of dollars for companies with such buildings. For example, subway stations can employ it and provide people waiting there with light. Industrial usage can also be applied.

Just like for business, it can be applied for home but some creativity is involved. Parans can develop a home system where every room is connected with "sun outlets". Together with electric lights, the system can be integrated seamlessly so that during the day, you use sunlight as your desk/kitchen light.

I like the idea of using this system inside a dedicated home theater room where a projector is used. When the movie is done, you turn on the lights and it's sunlight.
