CES 2020: the Best TVs have been presented - let's rank them based on the improvements brought to the marketplace. Who brought their A game and who snoozed?

Bear in mind that UHD Blu was built atop the tech of regular Blu which is why the first-gen 4K players weren't the hefty tanks of yesterformat, and even then the changes from range to range over these last four years have been mostly cosmetic with only slight alterations to add things like DV and Panasonic's branded HDR Optimiser, as well as making an analogue-audio-friendly beast like the UB9000.

Blu-ray wasn't launched fully formed and had several key functionality updates to the tech, plus the 3D update too which resulted in a wholesale change of player for many folks about four years into BD's life, doesn't seem as if anything like that is on the horizon for UHD Blu. Maybe an update to bring quad-layer discs into the replicated spec, but that's about it. BD players did start to have 4K upscaling added as an inducement to upgrade so I guess the same could be said of 8K upscaling BUT as we keep getting told that the AI upscaling in 8K TVs is literally the greatest thing ever (as they tout their denoising and sharpening like they're good things, blech) then putting it inside the player seems to be self-defeating in this case and certainly wouldn't have the same processing power as what the TVs do.

If anything, I think that the presumed explosion in UHD disc's popularity off the back of the next next next gen consoles will make the standalone player market shrink further, possibly making it ever more specialised a la the UB9000 as the manufacturers look to gain back some value rather than churning out supermarket specials.
I bought the Samsung BD-P1000 when it first came out

If that is true then just wow...

The cable companies reinforce this problem. I had a cable tech install a cable box, and he set the resolution on the box to 720p (instead of 1080i) and to zoom and stretch everything to fill the screen. I asked him about it, and he said that he is required to set it up that way so that people don't have problems and complain.

You should've seen the Sony BDPS300. Slow as molasses and built like a paving slab. The HD-D1 HD DVD player was even slowerer and even biggerer!

When dinosaurs roamed the Earth you might say. Especially when HD-DVD was a thing. Is it cool to slag HD-DVD off these day's? Seriously, I don't know why anyone thought it had a chance.

I attended Skyworth's Press Conference and recorded video.

We'll need to see and review these when they launch in the USA.

Hisense To Launch `Dual Cell’ 4K Ultra HD LCD TV

Among the highlights of Hisense’s new product innovations on display at CES 2020 will be 8K and 4K versions of the company’s “ULED XD” display (dual cell) LED LCD TVs featuring new industrial designs. Hisense’s ULED XD technology, which was shown as a technology statement last year, is intended to yield higher-performing LCD-based TVs that can deliver near-OLED black level, wide color gamuts, high brightness and wide viewing angles. ULED XD is said to fix the problem inherent in LCDs of light-bleeding by adding a second monochrome LCD layer to the main color LCD layer to more precisely control light output.

Up Close with the Hisense 4K ULED 65XD9G

Sound & Vision’s earlier post on Hisense’s CES product lineup included detailed info on the company’s 65XD9G 65-inch 4K LCD TV. What’s most notable about that model, shown above, is a dual-cell design that uses a 2K black-and-white panel as a backlight for a 4K full-color LCD panel, effectively giving the display two million local dimming zones.

But that’s not the whole story with the 65XD9G. The dual-cell panel further features an LED backlight with 132 local dimming zones and is compatible with the Dolby Vision and HLG HDR formats. According to a Hisense rep I spoke with at the company’s CES booth, Hisense is so confident that the 65XD9G “will give OLED a run for its money” that they are waiting for 2020 OLED TVs to arrive before announcing pricing for the set, which is slated to arrive in Q3. As you might expect, pricing will be several hundred dollars below new OLED models in the 65-inch screen size.

Other features to look for in the 65XD9G include an Android TV OS, far-field voice control via Google Assistant, and Dolby Atmos sound certification. The set’s HDMI 2.0b inputs won’t support HDMI 2.1 features such as eARC, and there’s also no ATSC 3.0 tuner, which the company says is coming to its TV lineup for 2021.

Well, all we can hope for is the best. It likely took years for some folks to learn and abide by the benefit(s) of healthy eating. Meanwhile, for the sake of the development teams behind filmmaker mode and for that matter the color scientist guys and gals of the development teams behind Dolby Vision IQ (ambient light compensation functions and more, without boring you with the precise mathematical equations)

This is what I was afraid of! The forced implantation of the X-Wide Angle at the expense of contrast ratio is not something I wanted for 55".

This X950H may be worse in native contrast than the X9500G now

The X9500G is better than the X900F, so the X900H is not worthwhile.

MicroLED is the dream tech for TVs, in that it should have all of the advantages of OLED and none of the concerns. A lot of people have misconceptions that MicroLED is right around the corner and you can buy it "soon." Sorry to tell you this, but that is false and it will be several years before it reaches what OLEDs are now going for. Most of that is pure ignorance and some of it is confusing the tech with MiniLED, which IMO should have been out years ago. Despite having a similar name, many people simply do not understand how very different and more complicated MicroLED is vs. regular LED. This article should give you some good education. This biggest issue, as I have stated many times, is getting the size down to a consumer level having to cram 3 RGB LEDs into 1 pixel is a pretty challenging task. While a MiniLED has between 500 - 1500 LEDs, a 4K MicroLED would have around 25 million. That's currently doable if you want a 100+ multi-$1000 box display.

Samsung did demo, a 75 inch 4K model and has the huge wall panel. That is a big deal, but offered no details beyond that.

Cnet is not always the most accurate when it comes to explaining tech, but they did a pretty good job on this article. Please read it.

Robert? Penton? I'd love your (and anyone else) thoughts!

I still think the industry should have started innovating LED tec a long time ago. Instead of hyper focusing on things like 3D, and more resolution.

Stick a thousand backlight master drive-controlled regular LEDs behind a dual-cell LCD screen (with as low a response time as possible on each panel, IPS would be fine ) and NO FLIPPIN' X-WIDE ANGLE SHITE and that would do me juuuuuust fine.

Are you sure I can't interest you in 16k with 4D holography?

I have given up hope that Sony will come up with something worthwhile the next couple of years. Would love to be proven wrong, but I'm not counting on it anymore.

That's the one, with the enhanced dopamine diffuser. Previous model didn't get a good review in What Cranium magazine so I hope this one is improved.
