Exactly as you first said it: there's a flashback to the opening scene about 10 minutes into the movie, which is now a flashback to Vietnam, but still plays the audio from the opening scene.

It makes sense to alter the flashback if you drop the opening, so I'm guessing whoever prepared the master did the US version first, then added the missing bits, but forgot to change these few seconds of video.

And yup, you were right. Woke up to my shipping confirmation this morning. I'll have to hope that this messed up sequence somehow plays effectively as a surreal collision of the demons of Rambo's past with the demons of his present. That's what I'm going to work really hard to convince myself of to try to make it all better.

Never mind the German release then, I'll just get the US disc.

Same. At this point, I'm just glad the extended cut is en route to me. This flashback situation is not ideal, but I'll deal with it for now.

If (when?) LG in the US ever decides to release the extended version in the US, I'll grab it, but for now I've got a nice "four disc" set and the completionist in me is relatively happy.

You may be half joking, but that's exactly the effect it had on me while watching. It works either way.

The flashback scene is very short and even with the wrong audio, it kinda still works. It makes it seem like he's having Vietnam flashbacks caused by the events earlier.

I watched the German extended the other night and never even noticed it had the wrong audio on the flashback. I thought there was audio from the rescue earlier in the film and then audio relating to the Vietnam footage.

Probably my mind playing tricks on me, I'll check it again tonight.

I just checked, and this is precisely how it plays out. There's a short bit of audio from the storm sequence before the first flashback is shown, but when it cuts to the Vietnam flashbacks start it segues into the appropriate audio for those. In other words, there's nothing obviously "wrong" with it unless you know it was shown differently.

It works in a narrative sense because the theme of John's inability to help everyone to redeem himself connects both scenarios. One triggers the other when he's in the tunnels. Could well be a deliberate choice in editing to link the two. It not only works, it works well.

I use a bias light, so my black bars don't really disappear into darkness or anything. It's more that my brain is trained to ignore them and focus on the actual movie image and composition.

Anyone here get the Hong Kong Blu-ray 2K edition yet?

Just curious if its actually extended and English subtitles are good? I would prefer to get a Region A\Free release if possible.

I suppose there’s a slight chance that it’s actually a deliberate change since the cinema release, by the director/Stallone etc, and not simply a mistake. But it’s probably just a mistake . At least it still works so well dramatically though.

In my slightly humble opinion, having seen the Zima version*, the UK UHD and now the German UHD, it actually works better this way. I noticed straight away that it was wrong but felt that it made more sense.
Maybe they didn't use the wrong flashback footage and this is actually an alternate edit.

*No, I don't feel bad about watching the downloaded Mexican version as I then went on to buy 2 different releases. Lionsgate lost nothing.

Yes, I’ve just checked and it has the wife rescue line and then the rest of the Vietnam footage plays out exactly as it should with the correct Vietnam audio. I’m happy with it and wouldn’t want it flashing back to the rescue footage from 10 mins earlier!

I have a feeling someone misremembered the theater experience and there was never a problem to begin with.

I just can't imagine someone editing a 30s scene to include the hiker audio specifically for the German release. I'm guessing the international cut always had the hiker line followed by the Vietnam footage and not a flashback to something that just happened 15 minutes go. That would be incredibly redundant.

This is for the German 4k, as well as Aussi blu?

Yeah, I messed with it quite a bit when it was new back in 2016 and again once I got into UHD and landed on pretty much the best settings I could get using AVS test bars. My black level is set to low. Setting it to high washes out the image. I'm happy with the picture quality overall, it's just those bars when watching UHD. When in HDR mode the black bars really lighten up - it goes hand-in-hand with how the local dimming works on this LG set. There are very limited vertical zones. Turning off local dimming makes the blacks completely turn over to grey-black. With it on blacks are pretty decent other than those bars with HDR.

Try a bias light. Your blacks will look darker than Dale Cooper's coffee.
