Maybe a new actor shouldn't match anything Ford did. If the stunts are real, and the story is gripping etccc, we'll accept a new Indiana Jones interpretation. Now, that doesn't mean Jim Carrey should play him obviously.

Yeah. Great. Let's have a flashback for a crossover film where Indy meets Robert E Howard's desert adventurer Francis X Gordon, also known as El Borak, and have El Borak star in his own film!

Harrison Ford Says INDIANA JONES 5 Is Dealing With “Scheduling Issues”
By SCOTT WAMPLER Feb. 25, 2020

Just a week or two ago, Harrison Ford - on the junket trail for the recently-released Call of The Wild - mentioned that work was due to begin on Indiana Jones V "in about two months". At the time, there was some debate over what Ford meant by this, exactly ("Does he mean it's gonna start shooting in two months, that he'll begin training in two months, or that pre-production would ramp up in two months?"), but now it's starting to sound like any interpretation might be irrelevant.

In a new interview with Hey U Guys (as quoted by The Playlist), Ford offers the following update on Indy V:

"I don’t really want to give them what they want to see, I want to give them something they didn’t anticipate seeing. They are used to a degree of disappointment when you revisit. Certainly, the Marvel movies have made a spectacular example of a success that worked the other way around, they killed it! Well, we’re not going to make another Indiana Jones unless we are in a position to kill it.”

Yes, yes. So far, so good. But then Ford adds:

"We want it to be the best. We’ve got some scheduling issues and a few script things still to do, but we are determined to get it right before we get it made.”

Hm. "Scheduling issues", did you say? "A few script things still to do"? At present, there's no telling if said "scheduling issues" and "script things" will be resolved within the two month period Ford mentioned in that previous interview. If they are, great! Full steam ahead on whatever the hell Indiana Jones V turns out to be. But if they're not, well, that would seem to spell a delay for this long-in-development and questionably-needed sequel.

It's all worded just vaguely enough to allow for a healthy dose of reckless speculation, which we invite you to take part in now, via the comments section below. In the meantime, do stay tuned for further updates on Indiana Jones V, which - as of this writing! - still has an official release date of July 9th, 2021.

And that's that. All we can do is wait. Filming will either start in April or be postponed.

I wonder if the 'scheduling issues Ford is referring to refers to Disney's deal with Pinewood studios and a possible conflict with a Marvel production. Marvel are moving out of Georgia if I'm not mistaken.

All the delays and they can't take a hint. Just let the series end.

I think the longer someone plays a role, the harder it is replace them. Sean Connery WAS James Bond but only for less than 10 years, and the rest is history. Ford has been Indy in the public consciousness now for nearly 40 years, despite only having done 4 films. That makes things a lot more difficult but not impossible given the right script and actor. That being said, I think Chris Pratt is probably the only choice out of the current crop of actors. I don't think Bradley Cooper is very likable, somehow. Otherwise it'll have to be an unknown.

Pratt is pretty much playing a version of Indy in the JW films.

Pratt has the comedy chops but not the charisma. No one can really take a character from being silly to charismatic in 2 seconds except Ford.

Anyway, if they really do have it scheduled to shoot in 2 months, they would've finalized the main cast now.

Pratt's a comedy actor, Ford's a serious actor who can do comedy.

Absolutely. That's why oi suggested Bradley Cooper for Indy Mk2, as he has more than proven his ability in both fields. the darkest, most dramatic moment in the entire sequence is Indy threatening Mola Ram on the rope bridge in Temple. That should be the yardstick for comparison...

So was Adam Sandler, and then he subverted expectations, most recently with Uncut Gems.

Martin Lawrence was always a comedy actor, made a lot of shit and suddenly folks were praising his dramatic side in BB4L, of all things. Sure, it's still verging towards the comedic, but I guess the point stands. Actors can surprise, can do more than what we expect them to do. Not saying Pratt would ever be as convincing an Indy as Ford, but I betcha many actors could make the switch easily from comedy to drama and back. Whether that's what audiences want to see, or if studios are ballsy enough to look beyond the obvious is another story.

Pratt can do serious, as proven by Passengers but he's nowhere near as talented as Ford, it's not even close.

Pratt was also very good in Moneyball before he was famous. Either way, I don’t want to see him as Indiana Jones. In fact, I don’t want to see anybody as Indiana Jones, because the series should have ended gracefully 30 years ago as Spielberg originally intended.

No one will be as good as Ford. But so far among the rumored actors, Pratt seems like the only decent choice.

How about Alden Ehrenreich, he has already played one of Harrison Ford's iconic characters... Han Solo.
I thought he was pretty good as Solo, maybe he would make a good Indy too.
