Default Harry potter collection video quality?

I've heard reports that the first 3 movies are of DVD quality and the only the last one really shines like a true blu ray. Well thats what I hear from the amazon.co.uk reviews. The real experts give them 4/5 and 4.5/5 for PQ. This doesn't tally up in my mind. Surely DVD quality is 1/5 or 2/5 at best?

If you bought the collection, were you A) Happy, B) disappointed or C) Content you got the best version of the movies available.

I am not a huge potter fan, but wouldn't mind having the collection. But really I want the 4/5 PQ to be more like my 4/5, which is is akin to something like ID4/Event horizon.

I don't want to buy it and find out that the first movie looks like Predator.

Any help appreciated.

The first 3 definitely have an "early" blu ray feel to them. That said, I've been pleased with the PQ -- special features and menu are a bit lacking, but overall sharpness and color are a big step up over the dvd version. I'd say go for the upgrade, especially since the prices on these aren't too bad.

Amazon features these a lot in their "Buy 2, get one free" sales, so if you can hold out, I'd advise it (that's when I got my Harry Potter set).

Hope this helps!

I have to say that the video quality on all the movies is excellent. now you have to take into account that the movies cinematography and special effects started off pretty weak and get better with each movie. if your on the fence about how the movies look, rent the 1st one it is the weakest of the movies in terms of picture, if your satisfied with how that one looks then i would buy the set as each movie looks better than the previous.

I heard the first two are actually HD DVD ports and it may be true because the last 3 are simply stunning to me, especially the 5th one. I actually think Order of the Phoenix is one of the top 10 blu-rays I own as far as PQ goes.

All 5 movies were released on HD-DVD and Blu-ray, and most likely include an HD-DVD-compatible encode. Half-Blood Prince will be the first movie on Blu-ray only.

They're all ports. The only thing that's different is we got PCM instead of Dolby TrueHD. But you are right that the first one that's not a port will be Half Blood Prince.

All the potter movies have very good PQ and AQ in my opinion. But OOTP just shines a little more over the others. The PQ on OOTP is Referance Quality

Just because blu-ray allows higher bitrates does not really mean the PQ will easily be better. Now, the movie itself will probably fill that requirement.

I find the newest ones to be outstanding, reference quality, the first two were good, definite improvements over DVD, but not reference quality.

I still have the HD DVD box set, but not about to trade it for Blu-ray when I can get equal quality and better features from the dead format!

Since when? I remember these in the b1g1 sales last year but that hasn't happened since then.

Warner, when they still "supported" both formats, always seemed to scrimp on the blu-ray versions with plain menus and little interactivity. The blu-ray menus were less interactive than DVD menus. I guess since they only used single-layer blu's and double-layer HD-DVD's, the HD-DVD's had more capacity.

Pretty sure the BDs were 50GB. (And they had uncompressed audio, which is more of a spacehog than the TrueHD on the HD DVDs.)

Same here. I know people harp on the SS and CoS, but I think the quality is fine. OotP is definitely top-notch, but they're all quite good looking/sounding IMHO.

That's exactly it all 5 are better than DVD but 3-5 PoA-OotP are reference quality and get better in overall quality in that order with 5 being an absolute 5 star transfer just amazing!

First two wasn't that great but still not bad, and the last two are pretty good, seems like the newer the better.

I picked up the first 4 in the buy 2 get one 1 sale in december ... I don't think they've been featured since then. I wish they'd do a b1g1 sale again, but I don't think that will happen again for awhile.
