[Show spoiler]where Gary had to ask for Arthur's help to let him out of his apartment (after Arthur brutally killed a co-worker), funny. Dark humor, to be sure, but something that was purposefully written into the story
to be funny.

It's a complex thing, woven into the Joker character, how his stand-up is tragic rather than funny, how is life is tragic. And here at this one point is a "funny ol' world" moment. I certainly gave a snort at the scene.

Anybody? Am I an asshat for finding humor in that, or did I react in a way the filmmakers probably intended?
I think it was intended. But I also felt that the scene was extremely powerful and effective in that it showed how he was very perceptive and appreciative when he knew someone genuinely cared about him, which really saddened me and made me feel for him.

[Show spoiler]DIGITAL

FILM

The top one is fully digital and the bottom one is film (that has been digitized). IMO They're both ugly example images and I don't trust that the processing was done correctly on the film image to replicate the look of a film print, nevertheless the top one is even worse. The top one has a messed up grayscale with reddish tones, dull greens, exaggerated muddiness in the shadow areas and a strange haziness which makes it appear less sharp.

I'm not going to reveal which one is which, in case the other poster wants to weigh in, but based on your answer, is "messed up grayscale with reddish tones, dull greens, exaggerated muddiness in the shadow areas and a strange haziness which makes it appear less sharp" really what you associate with digital that separates it from film?

I'll take a shot (and no, I haven't seen Yedlin's most recent demo, but I'm guessing that's where this is from). I think the top one is film and the bottom one is digital. For me, it's the sky. It's not quite clipping in the top, but it's blooming in a way I don't typically associate with digital. The bottom one keeps more of the sky detail.

I could be very wrong though, it's pretty interchangeable at the high-end of cameras.

It was definitely intended. There were other off color moments like when he forgot to “punch out”, and also when he walks into the glass outside the hospital.

I assume since this steelbook sold out so fast we'll see a new release of it later this year?

Maybe if they do a special edition due to it winning various awards.

[Show spoiler]

I'd say top is film, bottom is digital. Second one just looks 'crispier', and not in a good way - though that could just be due to the compression of the jpeg itself messing it up.

I lol'ed in the cinema and so did other folks around me, I always thought it was supposed to be a funny moment for its sheer absurdity.

So not sure if this is appropriate place to ask but looking for some advice. I bought the Joker 4K steelbook from Zavvi the other week and watched it for the first time tonight and throughout the entire film the audio was very weird, like audio pops, digital noise or something? Not really sure show to explain it but I tried the disc in another room and it worked perfectly fine. I assume that means there’s nothing wrong with the disc, is my player dodgy?

I would say. Did you try changing the audio track to another language on that player just to see if the problem was still there?

Take the disc out, reload and play. Sometimes that does the trick.

I don't think the original poster who I posted that to will respond, so I may as well reveal the answer.

Top one is Arri Alexa with Yedlin's film emulation, and bottom is film.

Gallery #7: in this link: http://yedlin.net/OnColorScience/index.html

Yedlin actually goes into great detail in that link explaining how the camera doesn't have to determine whether something looks like film or like digital. With the proper preparation, you can make something shot digitally look like film with imperceptible differences to the real thing.

Thanks. That's awesome how the actual film one looks worse (to me) than the emulated one, but in my de-fence I did note that the compression of the bottom image seemed to be setting the grain on edge in a way that's not happening in the first picture.

This happened to my Bestbuy steelbook copy, I had to change from the Atmos track for it to sound normal.

Just a FYI: German and French standard Blu-ray discs come with a Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 core instead of Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Pfff.

4K discs are fine.

Glad I imported the UK edition.

Finally got around to watching this last night after setting up and calibrating my gear in my new house. Impressed with the PQ and Audio. Found the movie predictable but well crafted.

Bizarre. Why would they press a different BD with lesser audio for specific markets? This studio is the king of one-size-fits-all.
