Lots of speculation on noir and 40s titles within:

[Show spoiler]Firstly, we are waiting on 1 or 2 50s noir, with the only possibilities as far as I can see The Unguarded Moment and The Restless Years. So Kino will have at least one of these, possibly both.

As for the 40s, if we assume that The Suspect and Night Has a Thousand Eyes are the two new-to-DVD noir titles, that appears to leave 2 from 5, since there are no more 1949 titles in the deal:

Smooth As Silk (1946)
All My Sons (1948)
An Act of Murder (1948)
So Evil My Love (1948)
A Woman's Vengeance (1948)

I think this might be the key to unlocking the remaining 40s titles in the deal. All things considered, I'd say Smooth as Silk is unlikely, and that the remaining 2 noir titles will be from 1948. This is important, because we're waiting on 4 1948 titles, and we can be fairly certain that Whispering Smith and Night Has a Thousand Eyes are two of them. So I'm thinking:

1948 - Whispering Smith, Night Has a Thousand Eyes, and 2 of All My Sons/An Act of Murder/So Evil My Love/A Woman's Vengeance

This is also significant because there are 2 Deanna Durbin candidates from 1948. So with these removed, we're down to 5, with only 4 more 40s Durbin titles coming.

Let me start with 1947. If the above theory is accurate, I think there are 4 realistic possibilities (we're only getting 2):

1947 - I'll Be Yours, Something in the Wind, California, Where There's Life

So at least one of these will be a Durbin title, possibly both. I have a suspicion that Where There's Life will be one of the 2 Bob Hope titles to miss out, but you never know.

Now on to 1946, which offers 3 realistic prospects (we're getting 2):

1946 - Because of Him, Monsieur Beaucaire, The Virginian

So another Durbin and another Bob Hope here. I say The Virginian because Kino have one more Joel McCrea title, and there's at least one 40s western we can't account for (though it may well be California, or indeed both).

Now on to 1944, which should be:

1944 - The Suspect plus one of Can't Help Singing, The Great Moment or Frenchman's Creek (this last one seems unlikely)

1942 is more complicated. But Kino have one 40s WWII film which is very likely Wake Island, and the Bob Hope seems certain, so I'm thinking:

1942 - Wake Island, My Favorite Blonde, plus one of Arabian Nights, Lucky Jordan or The Mystery of Marie Roget (this one seems unlikely because they've said no 40s horror, which this might be categorized as)

Looking at 1941, it will be 5 from 7. They only have one Fields title, so I think Never Give a Sucker an Even Break is an unlikely prospect. So that means:

1941 - The Shepherd of the Hills (basically confirmed), Nice Girl?, Caught in the Draft, Louisiana Purchase, Nothing But the Truth, Skylark

If I had to guess, it would make most sense if the 3 Bob Hope titles in the box set were all from 1941, with My Favorite Blonde a solo release (after all, My Favorite Brunette was). This would mean that Monsieur Beaucaire and Where There's Life miss out. This all means that Skylark would be the unfortunate 1941 title, along with Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.

Finally 1940, which will very likely be:

1940 - Seven Sinners, When the Daltons Rode

I may well be wrong here but here's what we've got to account for:

6 Durbin
4 Bob Hope
1 WWII film (surely Wake Island)
4 noir (2 new-to-disc)
3 or 4 westerns

I hope that's all clear lol!

The Suspect was unfortunately ruled out via process of elimination a little while back.

I believe it was ruled out when the Insider said no Ella Raines, only to be put back on the table when he corrected himself to say there was one Ella Raines title.

Great news! I'm currently on a kick of collecting and watching all of the Best Foreign Language Film nominees, so this is perfect! Is there any chance Kino intends to upgrade their DVD release of AS IT IS IN HEAVEN (2004) or have access to MONSIEUR VINCENT (1947) via the Studio Canal deal?

**I see now that this one was a "submission," and did not actually earn the nomination. But I'm no less interested.

This. Yeah, it was a failure over all, but I still thinking of it as an interesting failure. The good parts were too few and far between to save it, but they make the occasional rewatch bearable.

The opinion that such-and-such a book is "unfilmable" is overused. Some books present problems with adaptation, but aren't really "unfilmable". But I think the very structure of Bradbury's book really does make it count as unfilmable. They did give it the old college try, though, I'll give them that.

Me too. No director can make you WANT your protagonist to kill one of their loved ones like Robert Siodmak can... a seemingly common theme among many of his work.

Kino Insider - how many Western Classics volumes do you have planned? Also, will the proposed Audie Murphy set (being all westerns) be one of these, or billed differently?

Finally, is that it for 40s westerns in the Universal deal?
