Plus, the 1080P pink hue is unacceptable IMO.
Agree that there's more detail on the fish bowl and on the metal thing over Jab's shoulder, but otherwise there seems to be little difference. That thing hanging down on top left can be seen against the dark background on the 2011 BD, on the 4K it disappears. Plus the background of the 4K looks less distinct.

Really, really don't like the pink hue though, must admit.

Plus aren't the 4Ks and presumably their counter-part BD's reframed so you get a smidge more picture in the 2011 versions?

Just my thoughts, not pretending to be an expert.

I've watched The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones so far. From a picture standpoint I thought that TPM was the better work product. It was better than than the Blu-ray and overall the image was very good. Clones was good but didn't jump off of the screen as much as TPM. Some of that could probably be attributed to its more sedate color palette in parts of the movie. On my Denon AVR, at a level 30 volume setting, the Atmos track on Clones was damn good so no complaints there. One thing that I liked in Phantom and Clones was how Lucas dropped so many hints regarding Palpatine being the Emperor. Some were obvious but others were more subtle like a certain camera shot of Ian McDiarmid's face or an expression. Of course in Revenge of the Sith the actual reveal about Palpatine occurred but I did enjoy the way Lucas played with in I and II. I did rip the major features from the Bonus Disc of my Blu-ray Complete Saga set as MKVs and burned them to two BD -R discs which I'll keep handy. There are some others that are missing from the Saga set so I'll get a look at Bonus discs I and II to see if they're worth converting.

I did use the codes to put all of the movies an Movies Anywhere. All of them are in Dolby Vision and Atmos.

Do these discs have the original burnt in subs for the alien dialogue or are they same ugly generated ones that are on the Disney+ streams?

This guy claimed the OT had fake HDR and I assume there’s little to no difference between this and the discs, not sure if this has been “debunked” in any way.

Why do episodes 1-6 look so dark?

Are you going off those screencaps that have been posted?

If you are, don't worry, they're not that dark. Something funky is going on with the SDR conversion.

HDR is a color grading process done ontop of whatever dynamic range is captured by the camera.

As long as there's even 1 blip above 100nits, it's considered HDR. I assure you most of the movie is above 100nits therefore HDR.

No, I’ve been watching them and they look very dark. I’m using a Panasonic ub9000 with an lg oled b6 with hdr optimizer turned on, and I’m watching in an almost completely dark room. I found that increasing the dynamic contrast helps brighten up the image but what are the drawbacks to doing that?

Ah right fair enough. Also there's a risk of highlight clipping if you turn it on.

Have you tried increasing the standard contrast setting and the backlight?

It really depends on the type of TV you have and also how it's calibrated for UHD viewing. I use the now five year old Samsung JS8500 TV and depending on the movie, sometimes must resort to using dynamic contrast to brighten the image a bit. It's not just for some of the SW movies but other films as well. At the same time, there are other movies I have on 4K that don't require dynamic contrast at all so there's that factor as well.

They should have authored these as HDR10+ with Dynamic Metadata rather than the Static Metadata of standard HDR10.

I am having pretty good results with these settings for my Oppo-203 for my SDR VT60 display. It is not perfect but it works for me, at least for ROTJ last night.

Have Disney encoded any of their discs with HDR10+ so far?

I’m watching on a B7 with a Panny UB700 with no optimiser - not seeing it too dark at all. Empire looked a bit darker, but that’s because the colours are now correct, rather than the over-saturated contrast of the 2011 Blu-rays.

The Dynamic Contrast on the LG OLED 7 series essentially does what the 8 series and up does under the Dynamic Tone Mapping upwards. I don’t think the dynamic contrast on the 6 series performs the same thing as the 7 series. Either way, the optimiser on your 9000 should perform that task for you instead.

What in the movies in particular are you feeling look too dark?

They’re both at 100 as they should be :/
What’s interesting is that it’s only 1-6. Rogue One, Solo, and 7-9 all look fantastic, and at the correct brightness. If I watch those films with dynamic contrast turned up, they don’t look as good. Were 1-6 mastered at a lower brightness or something?

Not yet, and they look to have stopped Fox doing it also sadly.

Just to clarify, I’m turning up the dynamic contrast on the player, not the tv.

Finished watching the whole set and all I can say is that I'll never watch any other discs. They were all fantastic. Yes part 1 and 2 could of been better, but they were still an upgrade PQ and AQ wise. As far as being darker, people have been so used to watching some BD's that were blown out, that now they're having a hard time with these presentations. Wasn't too dark on my setup at all. For the AQ, it was fantastic on every movie, as long as it was turned up a bit. Some of the detail present on these movies were great.
