Rollerball 4K UHD (1975)

Official statement 04/27/2020: Unfortunately, there were several errors in the production of our ROLLERBALL editions. In order to anticipate Corona's closings of the production facilities (some in Italy) and the trade, we accelerated production in certain areas in March, which unfortunately caused QC to suffer in this complex project. Of course, this shouldn't have happened.

The following technical defects were found on the discs:
Since the UHD master was 4 frames shorter than the HD master, all audio tracks there are asynchronous by 4 frames (1/6 second).
-> The error is fixed.

In the remake, the original sound is asynchronous in some places. We have adopted the image and sound of the disc already published by another provider 1: 1. Apparently this problem was never noticed and corrected in the old release.
-> The error is fixed.

In the German 5.1 tone, the right channels have been interchanged with the left channels due to a labeling error. This is only noticeable in a few places, but should have been noticed at QC.
-> The error is fixed on the UHD and Blu-ray.

Accordingly, we will shortly offer three corrected discs (Rollerball 1975: Blu-ray + UHD and Rollerball Remake: Blu-ray) for exchange.

As already confirmed, the German and English “original sound” (PCM) of 35 mm elements were taken. It was never intended to remaster these versions, so these tones were clearly identified as "original" and "restored".
Of course there are the "remastered" tones on our discs, which have been technically processed as far as possible. In the future we will unfortunately no longer offer such restored original sounds as a bonus and will only use a final sound track as a remaster for our discs.
For the new edition of the discs, we will indicate in the sound menu with a blackboard that the sounds correspond to the original and have not been further processed.

In return:
- All customers who have ordered ROLLERBALL in the capelight shop will automatically receive the new discs without having to make an inquiry.
- All other customers please send an email with a photo or scan of the proof of purchase and address to support@capelight.de.

The new discs are expected to be delivered in 5-6 weeks. If the production of the new discs takes longer than expected due to the current situation, please be patient.
When new rollerball orders are placed in the capelight shop, these discs are automatically included as soon as they are available.

We regret the circumstances and still wish you a lot of fun with the editions of ROLLERBALL.

Great to hear they’re fixing the audio issues, but unfortunately, nothing about the encode and various PQ issues was mentioned.

I hate to spoil the party here as well, but they are NOT fixing the problems with the restored, original audio. They will only fix the 167 ms delay (5.1 track), the reversed channels with the German audio and the out of sync audio of the remake.

The other (bigger) audio problems will basically become a feature now by pointing it out. Yay.

(Though lol @ capelight basically saying "we wanted to put the unrestored OG audio on there as a cool bonus, but now we're not going to do it for anything else EVER because of you moaning bastards")

It’s interesting that they basically admit rushing this through QC so they could get sales in before the closings, but they’re only selectively fixing certain errors as a result.

I caught that also!!!

It is almost like we really don’t know what we are doing and shouldn’t be in this business at all. We will only include the most recent up to date remixed audio only?!?!?

If that is how they want to handle future 4Ks it would be best if they let another company like Turbine do a better release.

Exactly. It's good they are correcting the obvious sync problems. But why not go back and correct the other mistakes? It makes little sense. Ultimate Edition? Eh...maybe next time.

I'm confused too. Mine has already shipped from amazon.de so i should get it by the end of the week (I'm in Ireland). I hope they will be sending the corrected disks to customers outside Germany.

Through all of this, my Amazon.de order hadn’t budged, leading me to believe they were aware of the issues and holding anymore shipments until revised stock was made available by Capelight, which pleased me because, sure, I would be looking at another delay of a couple of months before having the set in hand, but at least I wouldn’t have to work through any international exchange rigmarole.

But, then, I just woke up to see Amazon.de’s dispatch email in my inbox. Now I feel like a real life Bad Luck Brian meme.

I emailed Capelight about sending replacement discs to the US, and they would. Ireland should not be a problem then.

Reiterated that production can take up to six weeks, and you do not need to send back the defective discs.

Mine was delivered today, but I forgot that I used my parent's address for delivery (I was intending to be holidays right now, but flights were cancelled) . I'll need to evade the lockdown police to retrieve it

That's the problem.

Whilst there's a list of issues with this release longer than a Ginger Baker drum solo, the general detail and colour appears to show a lot of promise.

All we know now is that there's a hypothetical, and technically not difficult to produce, version out there in the ether which we might never see or hear.

If Arrow were to take this master, do just a little work, correct the audio fully, and get DM to author the disc, we'd have a version of Rollerball which would make me weep with delight.

All this release has done is shed light on the deficiencies of previous releases, whilst introducing a bucket-load of its own.

I wish it had never existed, because we'll almost certainly never see that hypothetical version.

Rollerball has great sports action scenes, I just wished they had put a more interesting movie around those scenes. Or added more sports scenes!
