From Criterion's mission statement, "Since 1984, the Criterion Collection has been dedicated to publishing important classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions that offer the highest technical quality...." No UHD goes against their own mission statement.

Straight Story, I think is held firmly by Disney, sadly.

Outstanding month!

Most excited about Beau Travail and the World Cinema Volume Three, with Pixote and Lucia, and four films that I am completely in the dark about. I will gladly view the rest based on Martin Scorsese's curatorial skills!

By the way, this has been a sublime year for film noir at Criterion!

I’m very pumped about the two Dassins. Hopefully, Thieves’ Highway is not far behind.

I have to confess that it's been real tempting to post "Haven't heard of any of these. Nothing for me this month."

Any chance this could get a UHD from SC?

EDIT: Apparently it’s the same transfer as the older Japanese disc.

Beyond thrilled that Criterion is releasing the new restoration of The Elephant Man! Also makes me wish that StudioCanal would also loan their 4K restoration of The Third Man to Criterion to get that edition back out on blu-ray.

Even if they were doing UHD, at least half of their releases wouldn't be feasible for the format anyways. Blue Velvet, Do the Right Thing, and The Elephant Man? Absolutely viable UHDs. But it's not like we'd get stuff like World Cinema Project boxes or even the Varda box on UHD.

With that said, I'm disappointed they couldn't work something out for The Elephant Man

Over the moon about The Elephant Man and Brute Force. Can finally take the DVD of the latter off my wishlist and with the former, I can give my DVD to someone who would love it on that format.

They'd probably be more apprehensive, as they'd now have to do a triple release - DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD. Or, in the very least, a Blu-Ray/UHD release.

Criterion found it to be too costly to do the dual releases. The DVD only crowd did not want to have to pay for a Blu-Ray they were never going to use. And the DVD only crowd makes up a large portion of their customers.

My feelings are simple: Physical media deserves a physical store.

If I wanted to amass a huge collection of digital movies, I can click a button and I'd have the movie in AN INSTANT. Yes, instant gratification.

But there's something to the discovery, and the sheer joy of flipping through those plastic sealed blu-ray jewel cases in person and suddenly a real life human being walks over to you and notices you're holding a really cool Criterion like Hausu or Mishima and you strike up a conversation and end up talking for 15 or 20 minutes about movies and you end up becoming friends in real life and one day that friend introduces you to a woman who you fall in love with and marry and have kids and your entire life is changed forever.

Yet none of that would have ever occurred had you not been in a Barnes & Noble store in person searching for Criterions.

To me, physical media presents opportunities. Opportunities can change or alter the course of our lives. Sitting by ourselves and buying movies on a tv screen isn't the same thing and its dehumanizing and lacks the whole joy of social interaction as well as TOUCHING something real, something tangible, something that could change our lives that includes the human factor.

And this is why I love physical media. Because if I can hold a movie in my hand and not worry about it suddenly vanishing into thin air along some wireless connection, I feel reassured, I feel comforted, I feel I got my money's worth.

I hope Barnes & Noble's in-store Criterion sales I've been participating in over the past 10+ years continue. It's always something I enjoy every Summer (and Fall).
All I ever got out of visiting a Barnes & Noble store were rude employees and my car getting rear-ended in the parking lot.

Yeah, they'd have to make the price point $60 or $70 a film, so everyone would then complain about that...

Of that DVD crowd, a significant part of that was libraries. With their constrained budgets, libraries preferred getting DVDs because it was cheaper than getting Dual-Format. As I recall, Criterion said that it was largely the library market that caused them to abandon DF.

As a "fan" of David Lynch's works, I'm ashamed I haven't seen much of his works yet. Only seen Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Elephant Man, and Twin Peaks but haven't got around to watching a lot of the others. I know that he has a small filmography but if we were to include shorts just for the sake of the argument, I wouldn't call myself a fan but instead a "fan" of Lynch's works since I haven't watched all of them. Still have been holding back on Blue Velvet for no reason when it's still available for me to watch :/
