I talked to B&N yesterday in chat:

Me: I was curious if there was going to be a Criterion sale this summer?
Alma: I understand that you are inquiring about Criterion Sale this Summer.
Alma: Let me assist you with this.
Alma: Please give me 2-3 minutes to search this, thanks.
Alma: Thank you for waiting
Alma: We're sorry, at this time, Barnes and Noble does not make any announcement yet if there will be a Criterion Sale this Summer. I can't give feedback on that for the meantime.
Me: so i should just check-back on the site?
Alma: We would like to let you know that we’re updating our website on a daily basis - please check back often. Or, you may simply call us back so that we can check it for you.

I know this is sort off topic, but do any Criterion collectors here own or watch movies on 4k laser projectors? I'm thinking of buying one and can't decide which is a good one.

once cassavetes films go to 4k, that’s when i buy a 4k player.

just finished husbands, cassavetes is my favorite director and while this isn’t my favorite film of his, i enjoy taking the exhausting ride every now and then and i think the transfer looks great. harmony korine said you don’t watch husbands you live it and i feel that’s the best way to sum it up. here’s hoping they get minnie at some point.

I don't get why B&N can't at least have the 50% off sale on their website if they don't wanna do it in store. I'm indifferent if it happens or not, I'm fairly caught up on the Criterion Blu Rays I've wanted for the past few years but cancelling outright, whether it's B&N or Criterion's decision is silly.

An online-only sale, even if it goes for a week instead of a month, seems like a good compromise rather than no sale at all. I’m sure I’m not alone in that I wait for these sales for all of my Criterion shopping. I’d be very disappointed to have to wait until November—if they even do one then.

Especially with the Bruce Lee, Agnes Varda & Scorsese sets coming, that would be a real bad situation to not have a sale.

BenQ 3D/4K projectors seem to get high marks for around a $1500 price point.

I have had a B&N rep on the online chat repeatedly insist that it was not their job to provide me with any information. Talking to them is pointless.

I seriously doubt this sale is happening, which is unfortunate. Might have to cave in and order a few titles from Deep Discount next month.

I own 381 laserdiscs and still love them. You can't beat those gatefold jackets for artwork. Some I even frame. They make for terrific small movie posters.
Love dvds and blurays also. I have yet to feel that the jump to 4K is worth the extra cost.

Why complicate things. Barnes & Noble should go ahead with the sale and call it The 50% Off Criterion Collection You'll Get Your Crap Before November Sale.
I would not mind getting my order as late as October 31. I understand that this situation with covid-19 (God, I hate that name) is presenting retailers with logistical problems. They should just be up front with us and say it may be as late as October before we get our orders.
People can then decide if they have the patience or not.

Really want the Barnes sale to happen in store.

It is when I usually pick up box sets so I can pick one out that isn’t damaged.

I refuse to even order directly from Criterion because I did order a box set from them and it was well packaged yet was clearly damaged before it was shipped. I expected more when ordering direct from them.

As for amazon, I usually receive about 70% of criterion titles ordered thru them have box cut slashes across the spines.

I hate to say it, but I wondered whether it would ever happen when they did the 30% off sale. I didn't take part in the 30% off sale, but there seemed to be a lot who did. Maybe the "new normal" will be sporadic 30% off sales.

I hope Rialto Pictures gives the rights to Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie to Criterion soon. It's a crime that this film didn't get a 4K restoration yet surprisingly. If a 4K restoration is ongoing, that would be fantastic but I hope Criterion won't be using the same transfer as StudioCanal's (Belle de Jour's 4K restoration on Blu-ray looked pretty bad. But maybe could've looked better if it was transferred right). Phantom of Liberty and That Obscure Object of Desire would be great also!

Bunuel's movies need to resurface back into Blu-ray! Most DVD versions are already OOP

Guys (and gals)... I don't understand you. I already told everyone a few days a ago that I spoke to my local B&N guy (who is usually very reliable) who told me the Summer Criterion sale at B&N is NOT happening this year. Give it up already. B&N doesn't not have the appropriate Criterion stock in their stores nor warehouses... nor enough staff needed to ship the demand that will be requested.

So maybe Amazon (which I highly doubt) or Bestbuy might step up and do a Criterion sale... but I highly doubt that too cause they are probably in the same predicament.

Remember, thay all fired most of their staff months ago. That's why everyone is on unemployment now. Do you guys not read the news?

I hope this turns out to be wrong. Criterions are brutally expensive in Canada. Even with the 50 percent off sale they're still fairly pricey. Gives me more reason to just go all in on the Criterion Channel instead.

In America. Criterion has always been $20 on the sales. $27-28 on Amazon without including Shipping. In my opinion from a 2-year experience with Blu-ray collecting, I think that's pretty expensive. There are so many Blu-rays from other companies like Warner Bros., Universal Studios, and Lionsgate you can get for less than $10 but Criterion is ALWAYS $20 min normally for their Blu-rays. Unless if you get a used copy which is completely different

I know people forget this or might debate it, but Criterion release are meant to be considered special editions. it says so right there on the blu-ray sticker
[Show spoiler]

Who else would release an experimental foreign films from the 60's? Let alone pack it with written essays, new cover art, special features that sometimes include shorts, docs, or even newly commissions extras. Most other companies doing the same type of release would charge similar prices for a Special Edition. Plenty of them do. I think people start to forget that they are Special Editions, especially when they start buying so many of them. In my opinion, they are not meant to be collected like Pokemon in a Pokedex, trying to collect every single spine number. The spine numbers are a nice way to organize and keep track of releases, but it shouldn't make you feel like "ugh, I only have 43 of 1051 spines. I have a long way to go!". Instead, you should limit buying Special Editions of films to ones that are special to you. Especially now with the Channel. Explore and discover new films on the Channel. If it's special enough to you, then you may want to buy the Special Edition. You can still enjoy a film without having to buy a physical copy though.
