According to a Cinefex article, the DIE HARD 2 crash was originally even more horrific, going on and on with cuts back inside the fuselage as the plane burns and breaks. But they felt they'd never win the audience back from something that extreme (probably right, too.)

The effects on the plane really are superb, as using scale models still give a weight and mass which isn't quite there in CGI.

The only problem I have is that the flight is running on "petrol fumes", but when it crashes, the plane explodes in a massive ball of fire, of a size which would only have been caused if carrying a large amount of fuel. But a plane just crumpling in a heap with some minor fire from the wings isn't cinematic enough, and would have possibly left survivors.
